Kimi Antonelli Wins Italian Grand Prix at Monza
Kimi Antonelli created Formula 1 history at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza on September 6, 2026, with a remarkable comeback victory for Mercedes. The 20-year-old Italian started the race from 19th place because of a power-unit penalty but fought his way through the field to win his home Grand Prix. His victory ended Italy’s 60-year wait for an Italian winner at Monza, with the previous home winner being Ludovico Scarfiotti in 1966.
Kimi Antonelli Makes Historic Comeback
Kimi Antonelli entered the Italian Grand Prix as one of the leading drivers in the 2026 Formula 1 season. However, his starting position made victory look extremely difficult. A penalty connected with power-unit changes forced him to start from 19th on the grid.
Instead of allowing the penalty to affect his race, Antonelli quickly began moving through the field. His Mercedes showed strong pace around the fast Monza circuit, allowing him to overtake several competitors during the early stages of the race.
By the later stages, Antonelli had reached the front and was fighting his Mercedes teammate George Russell for the victory.

Antonelli Beats George Russell
Russell had been one of the main leaders during the race and looked set for a strong result. However, Mercedes used different tyre strategies for its two drivers.
A Virtual Safety Car period gave Antonelli an important opportunity to make a pit stop and switch to fresher tyres. Russell remained on older hard tyres, while Antonelli returned to the track with fresh medium tyres. The difference became important in the closing stages.
Antonelli used his fresher tyres and strong pace to close the gap to Russell. He eventually made the decisive move with only a few laps remaining and took control of the race.
Russell finished second, 3.857 seconds behind Antonelli, while Red Bull’s Max Verstappen completed the podium in third place.
Italy Celebrates Its First Home Winner Since 1966
Antonelli’s victory was especially important for Italian Formula 1 fans. The Italian Grand Prix is one of the most famous races on the Formula 1 calendar, and Monza attracts large crowds of passionate supporters every year.
Before Antonelli, the last Italian driver to win the Italian Grand Prix was Ludovico Scarfiotti in 1966. Antonelli’s success therefore ended a 60-year wait for another Italian home winner.
The Mercedes driver also became the first Italian to achieve this milestone since Scarfiotti. His victory was celebrated by fans around the circuit, giving the home crowd a memorable moment even though Ferrari did not finish on the podium.
Drama at Monza
The 2026 Italian Grand Prix was not a simple race. There were several incidents that changed the order of the field.
Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc crashed early in the race at the final corner, leading to a red flag. The stoppage allowed teams to make changes to their tyre strategies before the race restarted. Antonelli had already made significant progress from his 19th starting position by this stage.
The race also included several battles throughout the field. Drivers had to manage tyres carefully while dealing with Monza’s long straights and heavy braking zones.
Monza: The Temple of Speed
The Italian Grand Prix is held at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza, located near Milan in northern Italy. Monza is one of the oldest circuits on the Formula 1 calendar and is famous for its very high speeds.
The circuit is often called the “Temple of Speed” because of its long straights and fast sections. Cars spend a large amount of the lap at high speed before entering tight chicanes that require heavy braking.
One of the famous corners at the circuit is Curva Alboreto, previously known as the Parabolica. The track also features the Variante del Rettifilo, a major braking and overtaking area. Formula 1 cars can reach very high speeds on Monza’s long start-finish straight.
Strong Result for Mercedes
Antonelli’s victory gave Mercedes a major result at one of Formula 1’s most important races. Having both Mercedes drivers finish first and second also provided a major boost to the team.
For Antonelli, the win was particularly important because it came after starting at the back of the grid. Going from 19th to first required a combination of speed, overtaking, tyre management and careful race strategy.
The victory was also the latest in a strong 2026 season for the young Italian driver. After the Monza race, Antonelli had 267 championship points, with Russell 66 points behind him.

Other Drivers in the Top 10
Behind the podium, McLaren’s Lando Norris finished fourth, narrowly ahead of teammate Oscar Piastri, who took fifth. Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton finished sixth, while pole-sitter Pierre Gasly finished seventh.
Arvid Lindblad came eighth, Franco Colapinto finished ninth and Yuki Tsunoda completed the top 10.
The result was also notable because Gasly had taken his first Formula 1 pole position before the race. However, the Alpine driver could not maintain the lead during the full race distance.
Antonelli’s Championship Challenge
The Monza victory strengthened Antonelli’s position at the top of the 2026 drivers’ championship. His performance also increased attention on his championship battle with teammate George Russell and other leading drivers.
At only 20 years old, Antonelli is already playing a major role in the Formula 1 title fight. His ability to recover from 19th place and win his home race has made the Monza victory one of the most memorable moments of his young Formula 1 career.
