Indian Women’s Hockey Team Gets ₹50 Lakh
Indian Women’s Hockey Team received a cash reward of ₹50 lakh from Hockey India after achieving an impressive fifth-place finish at the FIH Hockey Women’s World Cup 2026. The reward was announced on 28 August 2026, a day after India defeated Germany 3-1 in the fifth-place classification match at Amstelveen in the Netherlands. The result marked India’s best-ever finish at the Women’s Hockey World Cup in 52 years.
Indian Women’s Hockey Team Achieves Best Finish Since 1974
The Indian Women’s Hockey Team ended its 2026 World Cup campaign in fifth position. This was a major improvement in India’s World Cup record because the country had last achieved a better position in 1974, when the team finished fourth.
India entered the fifth-place play-off after missing out on the medal rounds. The classification match against Germany gave the team an opportunity to finish the tournament on a strong note. India made full use of the opportunity and produced a convincing performance.
Germany, ranked fifth in the world at the time, was defeated 3-1 by India. The victory helped India secure fifth place in the final standings.
India Defeats Germany 3-1
The match between India and Germany was closely fought during the first half. Neither side managed to score during the opening two quarters, and the score remained 0-0 at half-time.
India changed the game in the third quarter by scoring three goals. Ishika Chaudhary opened the scoring, while Navneet Kaur scored twice to give India a strong advantage.
Germany managed to score one goal late in the match. Lynn Krings found the net in the 59th minute, but India maintained its lead until the final whistle.
The 3-1 victory was important for the Indian team because it ended the World Cup campaign with a strong result against a highly ranked opponent.
Hockey India Announces ₹50 Lakh Reward
Hockey India announced a total reward of ₹50 lakh for the Indian Women’s Hockey Team following its fifth-place finish. The reward was designed to recognise the players and support staff for their performance during the tournament.
Under the announced reward structure, each player in the squad will receive ₹2 lakh. Members of the support staff will receive ₹1 lakh each.
Hockey India President Dilip Tirkey and Secretary General Bhola Nath Singh were associated with the reward announcement. Such incentives are also aimed at encouraging players and support teams to continue improving their performances at major international competitions.

India’s Strong World Cup Campaign
The Indian Women’s Hockey Team had a competitive campaign throughout the tournament. India faced several strong teams and produced a mix of wins and draws.
During the tournament, India recorded a defeat against hosts and strong contenders the Netherlands. The team also drew matches against China, England and Australia. India registered an important 6-1 victory over South Africa during its campaign.
These results helped India remain competitive against some of the leading teams in international women’s hockey.
FIH Women’s Hockey World Cup
The FIH Hockey Women’s World Cup is the major international tournament for women’s field hockey. It is organised under the International Hockey Federation, commonly known as FIH.
The tournament includes matches that decide both medal positions and final rankings. Teams that do not reach the medal stages take part in classification matches to determine positions such as fifth, sixth and other places.
India’s fifth-place result in 2026 therefore came through a classification match against Germany.
A Historic Improvement for Indian Hockey
The fifth-place finish is particularly important because of the long gap since India’s previous strong World Cup performance. India had finished fourth in the 1974 Women’s Hockey World Cup, which remained the country’s best result until the 2026 tournament.
The latest performance shows the progress of Indian women’s hockey at the international level. Winning the fifth-place match against a higher-ranked Germany also gave the team valuable experience ahead of upcoming international competitions.
Captain Salima Tete and the Road Ahead
Salima Tete captained the Indian Women’s Hockey Team during the 2026 World Cup. Her leadership came during a campaign in which India competed against several internationally strong teams.
After completing the World Cup campaign, the Indian team shifted its attention towards the Asian Games. The upcoming competition provides another major opportunity for the players to build on their World Cup performance.
The team’s fifth-place finish, the victory over Germany and the ₹50 lakh reward have brought fresh attention to women’s hockey in India. The performance also provides encouragement for players preparing for future international tournaments.
