First Kaushal Mahotsav in West Bengal

The event marked an important step in expanding large-scale employment and skill initiatives beyond major cities. It was organised jointly by the Union Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC), and the Government of West Bengal.

Kaushal Mahotsav is designed as a large employment and recruitment platform under the broader Skill India framework. It gives candidates an opportunity to meet employers directly, participate in interviews and explore jobs according to their skills and qualifications.

More Than 8,000 Candidates Registered

The Balurghat event saw strong participation from young people and job seekers from the region. More than 8,000 candidates registered for the event, while over 7,500 interviews were conducted during the single-day programme.

More than 50 employers participated in the recruitment drive. Companies and organisations from different industries offered opportunities across areas such as information technology, banking, logistics, hospitality, healthcare, manufacturing and retail.

Among the participating employers were major companies such as Wipro, Tata Group and Axis Bank. The event offered more than 7,000 career opportunities, giving candidates a chance to interact with recruiters and understand available job roles.

Focus on Employment and Industry Needs

The main purpose of the Kaushal Mahotsav was to bring employers and skilled workers onto a common platform. Such events can help companies find suitable candidates while allowing job seekers to understand what employers currently expect from the workforce.

The employment landscape in India is changing rapidly because of developments in technology, digital services, manufacturing, logistics and healthcare. Companies increasingly require workers with practical skills that match specific job roles. Recruitment events such as this can help reduce the gap between training and employment.

The participation of companies from several sectors also showed that employment opportunities are not limited to traditional office-based jobs. Areas such as logistics, hospitality, healthcare, retail and manufacturing continue to require trained workers.

Role of Skill Development Organisations

The Union Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship is responsible for coordinating policies and programmes related to skill development in India. The National Skill Development Corporation works with government bodies and industry partners to support skill training and employment-related initiatives.

The Skill India Mission has also focused on vocational education, industry-linked training, apprenticeships and improving employability. Kaushal Mahotsavs provide a direct connection between these efforts and the recruitment process.

Ministers and Officials Attend the Event

Union Minister of State for Education Dr. Sukanta Majumdar attended the Balurghat programme. West Bengal Tribal Development Minister Kshudiram Tudu and Minister of State for Irrigation and Waterways Joyel Murmu were also present.

Senior administrative officials, employers and local stakeholders participated in the programme. Their presence highlighted the importance of employment and skill development initiatives in districts outside large metropolitan centres.

Balurghat Becomes a Major Local Employment Platform

Balurghat is the headquarters of Dakshin Dinajpur district in northern West Bengal. Holding the state’s first Kaushal Mahotsav in the town brought a major recruitment event closer to candidates from the surrounding areas.

For many job seekers, travelling to Kolkata or other large cities for recruitment can involve significant time and expense. Local employment events can make it easier for candidates to meet recruiters, attend interviews and learn about career opportunities closer to their homes.

The Balurghat event also reflects the growing focus on connecting local talent with organised employers as India’s workforce continues to expand across technology, services, manufacturing and other industries.

Skill Development and India’s Changing Job Market

India’s employment market is being influenced by digitalisation, new manufacturing projects, growing service industries and demand for specialised skills. Employers are looking for candidates who can combine basic education with practical and technical abilities.

Skill development programmes, vocational training and recruitment fairs can therefore play a role in preparing workers for changing workplace requirements. The first Kaushal Mahotsav in West Bengal brought this approach to Dakshin Dinajpur, with thousands of candidates participating in recruitment activities across multiple sectors.
