Mizo Ginger is a Geographical Indication (GI)-certified product, known for its unique quality and origin from Mizoram. Under the new mission, the government plans to promote pharma-grade Mizo Ginger in international markets. This step is expected to increase exports and improve farmers’ income in the state.
Mizoram Ginger Mission 2026 Focus Areas
The mission includes several important activities to strengthen the ginger sector. These include sustainable cultivation, quality control, food safety, farm mechanisation, solarisation, post-harvest management, and food processing. The project also supports better storage and transport facilities for ginger farmers.
The Ministry for Development of North Eastern Region approved Rs 30.13 crore for post-harvest management and processing infrastructure under the North Eastern Council’s Focused Development Component.
Mizoram Named Ginger Capital of India
In 2025, NITI Aayog declared Mizoram as the Ginger Capital of India because of its high-quality production and growing cultivation area. Ginger farming in the state is also connected with the Bana Kaih handholding scheme, which supports farmers through procurement and market assistance.

Procurement Challenges and Market Losses
In 2025, the Mizoram government spent Rs 141.16 crore on ginger procurement under support schemes. However, it recovered only Rs 12.78 crore through sales. Reports showed that 18,600 quintals of ginger remained unsold in Food Corporation of India godowns in Sairang during April 2025.
The issue highlighted the need for better market planning and stronger processing infrastructure, which the Mizoram Ginger Mission 2026 aims to address.
Steps Taken to Protect Local Farmers
Before releasing funds in February 2026, authorities identified and stopped alleged attempts to sell non-local ginger as local produce under the support price scheme. This action helped protect genuine farmers and maintain the reputation of Mizo Ginger.
The mission was officially inaugurated through a virtual programme by Jyotiraditya Scindia and Lalduhoma.
