NASA DART Asteroid Orbit Change Shows Powerful Planetary Defence

NASA DART Asteroid Orbit Change proves asteroid deflection works and shows new hope for Earth’s planetary defence strategy.

NASA DART Asteroid Orbit Change has surprised scientists after a new study showed the impact was stronger than expected. The mission not only changed the path of a small asteroid but also slightly shifted the motion of its whole system around the Sun. This result proves that space missions can help protect Earth from dangerous asteroids.

What Was the DART Mission?

The mission was carried out by NASA under the program called Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART). Its goal was to test a method to change the direction of an asteroid using a spacecraft.

Target Asteroids: Dimorphos and Didymos

The spacecraft targeted Dimorphos, a small asteroid that orbits a larger one named Didymos.
Dimorphos is about 170 metres wide, while Didymos is about 805 metres. These two objects move together as a binary system around the Sun. They were chosen because they are safe and do not threaten Earth.

The Historic Impact

In September 2022, the DART spacecraft crashed into Dimorphos at a speed of around 22,500 km per hour. This was the first real test of the “kinetic impactor” method, where a spacecraft hits an asteroid to change its motion.

Big Change in Orbit

Before the crash, Dimorphos took 11 hours and 55 minutes to orbit Didymos. After the impact, the time reduced to 11 hours and 23 minutes. This 33-minute change was much more than scientists expected.

Effect on the Whole System

Scientists later found that the impact also slightly changed the orbit of the entire Didymos–Dimorphos system around the Sun. The orbital period changed by about 0.15 seconds, and its speed shifted by a very small amount.

This happened because of the large cloud of debris that came out after the crash. This debris acted like a rocket push, making the impact stronger.

NASA DART Asteroid Orbit Change: Why This Matters

The results show that even a small spacecraft can change the motion of an asteroid. This is very important for planetary defence, which focuses on protecting Earth from space threats. The success of DART gives scientists more confidence in future missions.
