President Droupadi Murmu Flies LCH Prachand in Historic Military Flight
Droupadi Murmu made history by becoming the first Indian President to fly in the indigenous Light Combat Helicopter Prachand. The 25-minute sortie took place from the Jaisalmer Air Force Station near the India–Pakistan border. The flight marked an important moment highlighting India’s growing defence capabilities and the President’s engagement with the armed forces.

The helicopter flew over the strategically important Pokhran Firing Range, an area often used for military demonstrations and exercises.

During the sortie, President Murmu experienced the capabilities of the combat helicopter while observing the surrounding desert terrain. The flight also came at a time when the Indian Air Force is preparing for its major firepower demonstration called Vayu Shakti.
From the cockpit, the President shared a message praising the dedication and bravery of the armed forces. She also highlighted the importance of strengthening India’s defence through indigenous technology and innovation.

The Light Combat Helicopter Prachand is India’s first indigenously designed attack helicopter. It has been developed and manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited.
The helicopter is specially designed for high-altitude warfare and can operate effectively in mountainous regions such as the Himalayas. It is equipped with advanced avionics, stealth features, night-attack capability, air-to-air and air-to-ground missiles, rockets, and a powerful 20-mm turret gun. These features make the Prachand a key asset for strengthening India’s defence preparedness along sensitive borders.

This was not the first time President Murmu experienced frontline military aircraft. In April 2023, she flew in a Sukhoi Su‑30MKI at the Tezpur Air Force Station. Later in October 2023, she also undertook a sortie in a Dassault Rafale from the Ambala Air Force Station.
With the Prachand helicopter flight, the President has now experienced several of the Indian Air Force’s most advanced combat platforms. The event also highlights India’s commitment to strengthening indigenous defence production and modernising its military forces.
