Ghee Biosurfactant Discovery: Indian Scientists Develop Natural Alternative to Synthetic Surfactants
Researchers from the Institute of Advanced Study in Science and Technology (IASST) in Northeast India have achieved an important scientific breakthrough with the Ghee Biosurfactant Discovery. Scientists have developed a new biosurfactant using natural ingredients that could become a safer and eco-friendly alternative to synthetic surfactants used in cosmetics, medicines and cleaning products.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! The research was carried out under the guidance of IASST Director Ashis K. Mukherjee along with Professor M. R. Khan and senior research fellow Anushree Roy. Their work highlights how biotechnology can combine traditional Indian resources with modern scientific methods.
Probiotic Bacteria and Ghee Used in the Research
For the Ghee Biosurfactant Discovery, the scientists used a probiotic bacterium called Lactobacillus plantarum JBC5. The bacterium was grown using ghee, a lipid-rich dairy product widely used in Indian households.
Using statistical optimisation methods, the researchers were able to produce a special type of biosurfactant known as a lipopeptide. This compound contains both lipid and peptide components and has strong surface-active properties. The study shows that traditional food-based materials like ghee can be used as sustainable substrates in biotechnology research.

Strong Antibacterial and Cleansing Effects
Laboratory tests showed that the biosurfactant works effectively against the harmful bacterium Staphylococcus aureus, which commonly causes skin infections and wound problems.
When mixed with commercial face washes, the biosurfactant improved the product’s ability to remove stains and dirt. It also showed strong emulsification ability with edible oils, achieving an emulsification index of around 60 percent.
Another key advantage of the compound is its stability. It remained stable at very high temperatures of up to 276°C and worked effectively across different pH levels. These properties make it suitable for use in cosmetics, pharmaceutical products and other industrial applications.
Eco-Friendly Alternative to Chemical Surfactants
Surfactants are widely used in industries as emulsifiers, detergents and lubricants. However, many synthetic surfactants can be harmful to the environment because they are not easily biodegradable and may cause toxicity.
The Ghee Biosurfactant Discovery provides a promising bio-based alternative. Since biosurfactants are produced by microorganisms, they are generally more environmentally friendly and safer for human use.

Future Research and Commercial Potential
The research team is now conducting further studies to check toxicity levels and determine the proper dosage for different applications. They are also working with industry partners to explore large-scale production.
If commercialised successfully, this natural biosurfactant could reduce the use of harmful chemical surfactants in cosmetics, medicines and other consumer products, making everyday products safer and more sustainable.
