Career Background of RN Ravi
Ravindra Narayan Ravi is a retired Indian Police Service (IPS) officer from the 1976 batch of the Kerala cadre. He holds a postgraduate degree in Physics and built a long career in national security and intelligence services.
During his service, he worked in key agencies such as the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Intelligence Bureau (IB). His work mainly focused on internal security operations and intelligence analysis.
In 2014, Ravi was appointed Chairman of the Joint Intelligence Committee under the Prime Minister’s Office. This committee plays a crucial role in analysing intelligence inputs and supporting national security decisions.

Role in National Security and Diplomacy
RN Ravi later served as Deputy National Security Advisor in 2018. In this position, he handled sensitive internal security issues and contributed to negotiations with insurgent groups in Northeast India.
His experience in intelligence and diplomacy helped the government shape policies related to security and conflict resolution in the region. His role in the peace process with several Northeast insurgent groups made him a key figure in national security planning.
Tenure as Tamil Nadu Governor
Before becoming RN Ravi West Bengal Governor, he served as Governor of Nagaland in 2019 and also held additional charge as Governor of Meghalaya.
Later, Ravi was appointed Governor of Tamil Nadu. His tenure in the state often saw disagreements with the DMK-led government headed by Chief Minister MK Stalin. Some disputes emerged over delays in approving bills passed by the Tamil Nadu Assembly.
In 2023, he briefly announced the dismissal of state minister V Senthil Balaji without the Chief Minister’s recommendation, but later withdrew the decision the same day.
