Sainik Tujhe Salaam Assam Initiative: A Thoughtful Step for Veterans and Their Families
The Sainik Tujhe Salaam Assam Initiative focuses on honouring veterans aged 90 and above, as well as recognising the strength of Veer Naris and Veer Mothers. These families have carried the weight of sacrifice for decades, and the programme aims to express gratitude for their continued resilience.
For the first time, the initiative introduces annual home visits that will be conducted by district administrations and zila sainik welfare offices. These visits hold a deeper purpose than ceremonial respect they help identify immediate welfare needs, extend companionship and ensure that no veteran or family member feels isolated.

Officials have explained that the programme is built to encourage real connection. Many older veterans require regular assistance for healthcare, documentation, pension-related matters and emotional support. Through these structured visits, the state hopes to bridge gaps that often prevent elderly veterans from accessing timely help.
Sainik Tujhe Salaam Assam Initiative: Flag Day Observed with State-Level Commitment
The programme was officially launched during the state-level celebration held at Lok Bhavan in Guwahati. The event paid tribute to the courage and contribution of the Armed Forces, highlighting the importance of acknowledging those who once stood at the border and protected the nation in hostile environments.
The governor addressed the gathering and emphasised the selfless service of soldiers who face extreme terrain, harsh climates and unpredictable challenges. He reminded attendees that the Armed Forces also play a crucial role in relief operations during floods, earthquakes and other disasters, often risking their lives to save civilians.
The event served as a space to reflect on the values of discipline, loyalty, compassion and bravery shown by servicemen and women. Several veterans, families and welfare officers were present, representing the strong bond between the state and its defence community.
Sainik Tujhe Salaam Assam Initiative: Understanding the Veteran Community in Assam
Assam has a large veteran population spread across towns and rural regions. Nearly 41,968 ex-servicemen live in the state, along with over 10,361 Veer Naris. These numbers highlight why welfare initiatives are not only necessary but must be continuous and well-organised.
The Directorate of Sainik Welfare has been at the centre of this support network. With 21 district sainik welfare offices, the state has built a foundation that aims to reach families in every region. These offices provide help with pensions, documentation, scholarships for children, medical support and awareness programmes.
In recent years, Assam’s model of veteran welfare has drawn attention for its steady expansion. Just a few months ago, the state received a special commendation from the defence minister, recognising its effective outreach and strong coordination. This appreciation added momentum to the newly launched initiative and encouraged officials to strengthen welfare systems further.
Sainik Tujhe Salaam Assam Initiative: Strengthening the Emotional Bond with Veterans

The new programme goes beyond administrative work. It sends a message of gratitude and emotional support. Many elderly veterans have stories of bravery and hardship, stories that often remain within families. By honouring them through personal visits and public acknowledgement, the state hopes to preserve their experiences and keep their memories alive for future generations.
Veer Naris and Veer Mothers form an equally significant part of this initiative. They represent families who lost their loved ones in service, and acknowledging their strength is a way of recognising their silent sacrifices. The programme creates a system where their needs can be heard and addressed through regular interaction with official welfare networks.
Sainik Tujhe Salaam Assam Initiative: Public Participation and Flag Day Fund Support
The Armed Forces Flag Day programme also included an appeal to the public to contribute to the Flag Day Fund, which supports welfare initiatives for serving personnel, veterans and families.
During the event, the governor highlighted the importance of public involvement and encouraged citizens to participate with an open heart. He explained that although no contribution can match the sacrifices made by soldiers, collective support strengthens programmes aimed at ensuring dignity, healthcare access and social inclusion for the defence community.
The fund is used to assist families in need, support rehabilitation services, promote education and ensure that retired personnel and dependents continue to receive essential services. Public participation is a way for civilians to express respect and gratitude beyond symbolic gestures.
