Alcaraz Defeats Lehecka in Tokyo

The final at Ariake Coliseum was closely contested in the opening set. Lehecka made a strong start and put pressure on Alcaraz early in the match. Alcaraz responded by recovering the break and taking the set into a tie-break.

Lehecka led 4-2 in the tie-break, but Alcaraz produced five straight points to take the set 7-6(4). That turnaround gave the defending champion greater control in the second set.

Alcaraz then found a break in the seventh game of the second set. He protected his advantage and served out the match to win 6-4. The final lasted around 96 minutes.

A Second Straight Japan Open Title

The Alcaraz Japan Open win made him the first man since Pete Sampras to successfully defend the Tokyo title. Alcaraz had won the tournament in 2025 and returned as the top seed and defending champion in 2026.

The victory also extended his strong record at ATP 500 events. His Tokyo success was his 10th ATP 500 title, placing him among the small group of players who have reached that mark.

For Alcaraz, the result was especially significant because he had not won a tournament since the Qatar Open in February.

Strong Return After Wrist Injury

Alcaraz returned to competitive tennis after missing around four and a half months because of a wrist injury. His comeback began in late August, and he later reached the quarter-finals of the US Open.

The Japan Open was only his second singles tournament since returning from the injury. Winning the title so soon after his comeback made the Tokyo result an important moment in his 2026 season.

The Spaniard had spoken about the physical and mental challenges of recovering from the injury. His performance in Tokyo showed that he was again able to compete successfully through a full tournament.

Alcaraz Takes His Third Title of 2026

The Alcaraz Japan Open victory was his third ATP title of 2026. He started the season strongly by winning the Australian Open, where he captured his seventh Grand Slam title and completed the career Grand Slam.

He then won the Qatar Open in February before his injury break. His Tokyo victory therefore became his first title since February and added another ATP 500 trophy to his collection.

The Japan Open title also took his career singles total to 27 ATP titles.

Lehecka Puts Up a Strong Fight

Jiri Lehecka entered the final after an impressive run in Tokyo. The Czech player was ranked 19th and had won six matches in a row before facing Alcaraz in the final.

Lehecka showed his quality during the opening stages and took an early lead against the defending champion. However, Alcaraz managed to recover and became stronger as the match progressed.

The Czech player had also reached the final after defeating Valentin Vacherot in the semi-final. Despite losing the final, his performance in Tokyo was one of the strongest tournament runs of his season.

Alcaraz’s 2026 Season Continues

The Alcaraz Japan Open victory comes during an important part of the 2026 ATP calendar. With the regular season moving towards its final weeks, players are competing for ranking points and places in the ATP Finals.

Alcaraz is scheduled to continue his campaign at the Shanghai Masters. He is expected to face Juan Manuel Cerundolo or a qualifier in the opening round of the tournament.

The Shanghai Masters is an ATP Masters 1000 event and provides Alcaraz with another opportunity to build momentum after his successful return from injury.

Jannik Sinner’s Season Ends Early

The wider men’s tennis season has also been affected by injuries. World No. 1 Jannik Sinner confirmed that he would miss the rest of the 2026 season because of a knee injury.

Sinner’s absence changes the competitive picture for the final part of the season, while Alcaraz’s return adds another major name to the group competing for the remaining titles.

With the Shanghai Masters, Paris Masters and ATP Finals still ahead, Alcaraz will have several important tournaments remaining in the 2026 season.

Tokyo Win Gives Alcaraz Fresh Momentum

The Alcaraz Japan Open title has given the 23-year-old Spaniard a strong start to the final stretch of his season. He entered Tokyo looking to regain his rhythm after months away from the tour and left with another ATP trophy.

His victory over Lehecka also showed his ability to adjust during a difficult final. After a slow start and a tight first set, Alcaraz raised his level at the key moments and finished the match in straight sets.

The Tokyo title now gives Alcaraz another chance to build confidence and match fitness as the 2026 ATP season moves towards its final major tournaments.
