Israel Multi-Layered Air Defence System: How the Advanced Shield Protects the Nation

Israel Multi-Layered Air Defence System explained: Arrow, David’s Sling, Iron Dome, Iron Beam and THAAD protecting Israel from missile threats.

The Israel Multi-Layered Air Defence System is considered one of the most advanced defence networks in the world. It is designed to protect the country from ballistic missiles, rockets, drones and other aerial threats. The system uses several layers of interception technologies that work together to detect, track and destroy incoming threats before they reach populated areas.

Israel developed this defence structure mainly to counter missile attacks from hostile groups and regional rivals. By combining long-range, mid-range and short-range systems, the country has created a strong protective umbrella over its territory.

Arrow System: Long-Range Missile Defence

The Arrow system forms the top layer of the Israel Multi-Layered Air Defence System. It includes Arrow-2 and Arrow-3, which are designed to intercept long-range ballistic missiles.

Arrow-2 intercepts missiles within the Earth’s atmosphere. In contrast, Arrow-3 can destroy ballistic missiles outside the atmosphere, a capability known as exo-atmospheric interception. This high-altitude interception is important because it allows dangerous warheads to be destroyed far away from Israeli territory.

The Arrow programme was developed by Israel Aerospace Industries with support from the U.S. aerospace company Boeing.

David’s Sling: The Mid-Range Defence Layer

David’s Sling protects Israel from medium-range missile threats fired from distances between about 100 km and 200 km. It also has the ability to intercept drones, aircraft and cruise missiles.

This system fills the gap between long-range Arrow interceptors and the shorter-range Iron Dome. David’s Sling was developed jointly by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and the U.S. defence company RTX Corporation.

By covering this middle layer, the system strengthens Israel’s defence network and ensures that threats missed by one layer can be intercepted by another.

Iron Dome and Iron Beam: Short-Range Protection

The Iron Dome is the most widely known component of the Israel Multi-Layered Air Defence System. Operational since 2011, it intercepts short-range rockets, mortars and drones.

Each Iron Dome battery uses radar to track incoming rockets and launches interceptors only if the rockets are expected to hit populated areas. This selective targeting helps reduce costs while protecting cities and civilian infrastructure. A naval version of Iron Dome was introduced in 2017 to protect offshore assets.

Another new addition is Iron Beam, a ground-based laser defence system that became operational in 2025. Instead of using missiles, Iron Beam uses high-power laser energy to destroy small aerial threats such as drones and mortars. This technology can significantly reduce interception costs.

U.S. THAAD Support in Israel’s Defence Network

The United States has also supported Israel’s defence shield by deploying the THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Area Defense) system. THAAD intercepts ballistic missiles during the final stage of their flight, known as the terminal phase.

Together with Arrow, David’s Sling, Iron Dome and Iron Beam, THAAD strengthens the overall Israel Multi-Layered Air Defence System, making it one of the most comprehensive missile defence networks in the world.
