The Sawan Barwal Marathon Record surpassed the long-standing mark of 2:12:00 set by Shivnath Singh in 1978. This made it one of the oldest records in Indian athletics. Impressively, Barwal achieved this milestone in his debut marathon and secured 20th position in a competitive race won by Guye Adola.
Dramatic Finish Amid Harsh Conditions
Barwal faced extreme difficulty in the final moments of the race. Strong cold winds in Rotterdam affected his body after he poured water over his head to stay cool. Just 20 metres before the finish line, he collapsed twice due to the sudden chill and exhaustion. Despite brief blackouts, he showed strong determination and completed the race with support.

Training and Comeback Journey
The Sawan Barwal Marathon Record reflects years of hard work and disciplined training. Under coach Ajith Markose and as part of Project 2:09, Barwal improved his endurance significantly. He earlier performed well in half marathons and showed strong VO2 max levels, which measure aerobic fitness. After recovering from an injury that delayed his marathon debut, he delivered an outstanding performance and qualified for the Asian Games.
Impact on Indian Athletics
The Sawan Barwal Marathon Record is expected to motivate many young athletes in India. Breaking such a long-standing record has removed a mental barrier in long-distance running. With better training methods and support, Indian runners may achieve even faster timings in the future.
