Sonepur International Airport Gets Cabinet Nod
Sonepur International Airport has been officially approved by the Bihar state cabinet, giving a major push to air connectivity in north Bihar. The decision was taken during a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. The airport will be built in Sonepur, located in Saran district, and is expected to become one of the largest infrastructure projects in the state.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! The government has set a target to complete the airport by 2030. With this project, Bihar aims to improve regional connectivity, support economic growth, and reduce pressure on existing airports.
Large Runway and Modern Infrastructure
One of the key highlights of the project is its 4,200-metre-long runway. This long runway will allow large aircraft to operate smoothly. Wide-body planes such as the Airbus A380 can land and take off on a runway of this size. This shows that the airport is being designed to handle international flights and heavy passenger traffic.
The airport will be spread across around 4,228 acres of land between Hajipur and Dumaria. Due to its large area, it will be the biggest airport in Bihar in terms of land size. The design includes space for passenger terminals, cargo facilities, aircraft parking bays, maintenance areas, and other modern amenities.

Officials have stated that the airport will support both passenger and cargo services. This means it will not only serve travelers but also help in the transportation of goods.
Sonepur International Airport Land Acquisition and Government Approval
Before the cabinet approval, the project had already received site clearance from the Union Civil Aviation Ministry. It also got in-principle approval from the central government. The project was mentioned in the Union Budget, which shows that it holds importance beyond the state level.
The Bihar government has allocated ₹1,302 crore for land acquisition. The process of acquiring land has already begun. Land acquisition is often a sensitive and complex process, as it involves compensation and coordination with landowners. The government has assured that proper procedures will be followed to ensure fairness.
Early planning and funding are important steps in keeping the project on schedule. By starting land acquisition early, the government hopes to avoid delays in construction.
Impact on North Bihar Connectivity
Currently, Bihar’s main airport is the Jay Prakash Narayan International Airport in Patna. Other operational airports include Gaya, Darbhanga, and Purnia. In recent years, Darbhanga airport has seen increased passenger traffic due to improved connectivity. There are also plans to upgrade Darbhanga to international status in the future.
However, people living in north Bihar often have to travel long distances to reach Patna airport. This causes inconvenience and adds travel time. The new Sonepur International Airport will reduce this burden and provide a closer option for many districts in the region.
The airport is also expected to reduce congestion at Patna airport, which has limited space for expansion. By sharing passenger traffic, the new airport can improve overall efficiency in the state’s aviation network.
Economic and Business Opportunities
Improved air connectivity often brings economic benefits. With an international airport in Sonepur, businesses may find it easier to invest in north Bihar. Industries that depend on quick transportation, such as food processing and manufacturing, can benefit greatly.
Bihar is known for agricultural products like litchi, makhana, vegetables, and grains. A modern cargo facility at the airport can help farmers send their products to other states and even export them abroad. Faster transport reduces spoilage and helps farmers get better returns.
Tourism may also receive a boost. Bihar has important cultural and historical sites such as Bodh Gaya, Nalanda, and Vaishali. Easier international access can attract more foreign tourists. This can support local hotels, restaurants, and small businesses.
The construction phase of the airport will also create jobs. Engineers, construction workers, and other professionals will be involved for several years. After completion, the airport will need staff for operations, security, customer service, and maintenance. This can generate long-term employment opportunities for local youth.
Sonepur International Airport and Other Key Cabinet Decisions
During the same cabinet meeting, 35 proposals were approved across different departments. One major decision was the sanction of ₹70 crore for anti-erosion work in Bhagalpur district.

The funds will be used to strengthen an embankment between Ismailpur and Bindtoli. Last year, floods caused a breach of about 80 metres in this embankment, leading to serious waterlogging in nearby areas. Strengthening such structures is important in a flood-prone state like Bihar.
This decision shows that while the government is focusing on big development projects like airports, it is also addressing issues related to disaster management and public safety.
A Step Toward Modern Infrastructure
India has been rapidly expanding its aviation network in recent years. Smaller cities are being connected by new airports, and air travel has become more common among people. Sonepur International Airport fits into this wider trend of improving infrastructure and boosting regional growth.
For Bihar, this project represents more than just a new airport. It is a sign of growing ambition and a focus on balanced development. North Bihar, which has often faced connectivity challenges, may see significant changes once the airport becomes operational.
With proper planning, timely execution, and continued support from both the state and central governments, Sonepur International Airport could become a major gateway for trade, travel, and opportunity in the coming years.
