Modern Customs and Immigration Complex at Bogibeel
One of the key developments under the Sonowal Brahmaputra Waterway Projects is the new Customs and Immigration Complex at Bogibeel. The facility has been designed as a modern tourist-cum-cargo terminal to support both passenger and cargo movement.
The complex integrates customs, immigration and administrative functions of the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) within a single building. It features arrival and departure halls, cargo storage areas, office spaces for officials, staff facilities and advanced security systems.
This integrated infrastructure is expected to streamline cargo handling and support smoother trade operations through the Indo‑Bangladesh Protocol on Inland Water Transit and Trade, helping reduce delays and improving efficiency.

Dhubri Facility to Enhance Cross-Border Commerce
Another major component of the Sonowal Brahmaputra Waterway Projects is the Customs and Immigration Complex at Dhubri in western Assam. Located close to the Bangladesh border, the facility is expected to become an important hub for cross-border trade.
The new infrastructure will strengthen regulatory oversight and support export-import activities with neighbouring countries such as Bangladesh and Bhutan. By improving cargo clearance systems and transport logistics, the project aims to reduce costs and encourage more trade through inland waterways.
Heritage Building Renovation at Dibrugarh
The renovation of the IWAI Heritage Building at Dibrugarh is another highlight of the Sonowal Brahmaputra Waterway Projects. The restored building combines traditional architectural elements with modern operational facilities.
Apart from supporting administrative work, the project is expected to promote river tourism and preserve the historical identity of the Brahmaputra riverfront. It reflects the government’s effort to balance infrastructure development with cultural preservation.

Expanding River-Based Connectivity in the Northeast
The Sonowal Brahmaputra Waterway Projects are part of a wider strategy to improve inland water transport in the Northeast. The National Waterways Act, 2016 declared several rivers in the region as national waterways, including the Brahmaputra.
With improved terminals, modern regulatory facilities and better cargo handling systems, the government aims to transform the Brahmaputra into a major trade and transport corridor. These initiatives are expected to strengthen regional connectivity, promote economic growth and support India’s Act East policy.
