Suchika Tariyal has created history at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games 2026 by winning India’s first-ever medal in mixed martial arts (MMA). The 36-year-old Indian athlete secured bronze in the women’s Traditional 60kg category on September 21 after reaching the semi-finals. MMA is being held as a medal sport at the Asian Games for the first time in Aichi-Nagoya, making Tariyal’s result a landmark moment for Indian combat sports.

Suchika Tariyal Secures Historic Bronze

Tariyal entered the medal rounds after defeating Mongolia’s Altanchimeg Baigalmaa 2-0 in the quarter-final on September 20. The victory guaranteed her at least a bronze medal because both losing semi-finalists in the Traditional MMA format receive bronze medals.

In the semi-final on September 21, Tariyal faced Singapore’s Tiffany Teo Hui Hoon in the women’s Traditional 60kg category. The contest went into overtime and ended in Teo’s favour. The result sent Teo into the gold-medal contest while Tariyal took bronze.

The final outcome of the event later saw Teo win the gold medal, Uzbekistan’s Khiola Sobirova take silver, and Tariyal and Cambodia’s Cheng Dalin receive bronze medals.

MMA Makes Asian Games Debut

Mixed martial arts has made its Asian Games debut at Aichi-Nagoya 2026. The Olympic Council of Asia confirmed MMA as part of the sports programme for the 20th Asian Games in 2025.

The sport features both Traditional and Modern MMA formats. Traditional MMA includes striking, grappling and submission techniques, with athletes also using the gi and protective equipment. Modern MMA uses fight shorts and different protective equipment while retaining the combination of striking and grappling skills.

The inclusion of MMA has brought a new combat sport to the Asian Games programme. The Aichi-Nagoya Games are being held in Japan from September 19 to October 4, 2026, with athletes from across Asia competing in a wide range of sports.

Tariyal’s Journey Across Combat Sports

Suchika Tariyal has competed in several combat sports during her career. She represented India in judo at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and later competed in kurash at the 2023 Asian Games.

Her career also includes major achievements in jiu-jitsu. In 2024, she won a world championship title in jiu-jitsu, adding another international achievement before making a stronger move towards MMA. The International Jiu-Jitsu Federation’s ranking records her as the winner of the 2024 Adults World Championships in the women’s 57kg category.

Her experience in judo, kurash and jiu-jitsu provided a strong grappling background for MMA. Before the Asian Games, she had also returned to professional MMA and signed a multi-fight contract with BRAVE Combat Federation in November 2024.

From Judo to MMA

Tariyal’s transition to MMA was part of a longer sporting journey. She began with judo and later moved between different martial arts as she looked for new competitive opportunities.

Her participation at the 2022 Commonwealth Games came in the women’s 57kg judo category. She finished fifth after competing through the main draw and repechage stages.

She later represented India in kurash at the 2023 Asian Games. After achieving success in jiu-jitsu, Tariyal turned her attention to MMA, where her grappling skills could be combined with striking techniques.

Her return to MMA also came after a long break from the sport. Reports on her career note that she first competed in MMA in 2017 before spending several years focusing on other combat sports.

India’s First Asian Games MMA Medal

Tariyal’s bronze is significant because it is India’s first Asian Games medal in MMA. She was also India’s only representative in the MMA competition at Aichi-Nagoya, according to reports ahead of the Games.

Her quarter-final victory was particularly important because it ensured India would have a medal in a sport making its first appearance at the continental Games. Her semi-final against Teo then decided which athlete would advance to the gold-medal match.

The medal adds another achievement to Tariyal’s long career across combat sports and places her name in the history of MMA at the Asian Games.

MMA Gains Attention Across Asian Sports

The introduction of MMA has added another discipline to the combat-sports programme at the Asian Games. The OCA has also included MMA in other regional multi-sport events, including the Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games scheduled in Riyadh later in 2026.

At Aichi-Nagoya, athletes from several Asian countries competed in different MMA weight categories. The first MMA gold medal in the Games went to Tajikistan’s Mirzobek Umarov in the men’s Modern MMA 60kg category.

Women’s MMA has also produced historic results during the Games. Thailand’s Kanjutha Phattaraboonsorn won the women’s Modern MMA 54kg title, while Singapore’s Tiffany Teo won the women’s Traditional MMA 60kg title.

For India, Suchika Tariyal’s bronze has opened the country’s Asian Games medal record in MMA and added another discipline to India’s growing presence across combat sports.
