SUJVIKA AI Biotech Data Portal Launch Strengthens India’s Bioeconomy Vision

SUJVIKA AI Biotech Data Portal Launch boosts India’s bioeconomy with AI-driven import data, supporting innovation, indigenisation and growth.

The SUJVIKA AI Biotech Data Portal Launch marks an important milestone in India’s biotechnology journey, highlighting how digital intelligence and artificial intelligence can support national self-reliance goals. The new platform was launched by Dr Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State, during the celebrations of the 40th Foundation Day of the Department of Biotechnology. The event took place at the Civil Services Officers Institute, bringing together policymakers, scientists, industry leaders, and innovators.

Developed in collaboration with ABLE (Association of Biotechnology Led Enterprises), SUJVIKA is designed to act as a smart digital gateway to biotechnology trade data. Its launch reflects India’s growing focus on data-driven policymaking, innovation-led growth, and domestic manufacturing strength.

What SUJVIKA Brings to the Biotechnology Ecosystem

At its core, SUJVIKA is a Trade Statistics Digital Intelligence Platform. It presents authenticated and well-structured data related to biotechnology imports in India. The portal uses artificial intelligence tools to organise complex trade information into a format that is easy to understand and useful for decision-making.

Through sector-wise insights, SUJVIKA covers areas such as biochemical products, industrial enzymes, and other biotechnology-related imports. This allows users to clearly see which products India depends on heavily from overseas markets. With this clarity, industries and policymakers can identify areas where domestic production can be strengthened.

The SUJVIKA AI Biotech Data Portal Launch is expected to help startups, researchers, and companies align their innovation strategies with national needs. By highlighting high-value and high-volume imports, the portal supports informed planning and encourages investments in local manufacturing.

Strategic Importance for Atmanirbhar Bharat

One of the key goals behind SUJVIKA is to support indigenisation. By showing where import dependency is high, the portal helps Indian companies focus on developing alternatives within the country. This supports the broader vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat and reduces long-term reliance on foreign suppliers.

The platform also opens new opportunities for public–private partnerships. When industry, research institutions, and government agencies work with the same reliable data, collaboration becomes more effective. SUJVIKA therefore acts as a common reference point for innovation planning and policy support.

Biotechnology as a Driver of the Next Industrial Wave

During the launch, the Minister underlined that biotechnology is set to drive the next industrial revolution. India’s long-term vision is to build a strong and sustainable bioeconomy that contributes significantly to national development. Under the Viksit Bharat roadmap, the country aims to achieve a bioeconomy worth $1 trillion by 2047.

The SUJVIKA AI Biotech Data Portal Launch fits directly into this ambition. By combining AI with trade intelligence, India is creating modern digital tools that can guide scientific progress and industrial growth side by side.

Rapid Growth of India’s Bioeconomy

India’s bioeconomy has seen remarkable expansion over the last decade. From nearly USD 10 billion in 2014, it has grown to about USD 165.7 billion in 2024. This growth reflects strong policy support, rising private investment, and a thriving startup ecosystem.

The number of biotechnology startups has increased from fewer than 100 in 2014 to over 11,000 today. India has also emerged as one of the world’s leading vaccine manufacturers and a preferred destination for biotech research and production.

Institutions such as BIRAC and the Biotechnology Research and Innovation Council continue to play a vital role in supporting startups and innovators through funding, mentorship, and infrastructure.

Policy Framework Supporting Innovation

Strong policies have supported this growth. The BioE3 Policy, focused on Biotechnology for Economy, Environment and Employment, aims to promote high-performance biomanufacturing. It encourages sustainable practices while creating jobs and boosting exports.

The Ministry of Science & Technology, through the Department of Biotechnology, is implementing several initiatives to strengthen indigenous capabilities and reduce import dependence. SUJVIKA complements these efforts by providing the data backbone needed for smart decisions.

Building Advanced Research Infrastructure

India is also investing heavily in advanced research facilities. A National Biofoundry Network has been established, consisting of six specialised biofoundries and 21 advanced bio-enabler facilities. These centres support cutting-edge research and help translate laboratory work into market-ready products.

In addition, a network of 95 bio-incubators across 21 States and Union Territories supports more than 1,800 incubated startups. A ₹2,000 crore national call under the ₹1 lakh crore Research, Development and Innovation initiative further strengthens the innovation ecosystem.

Progress in Genomics and Space Biotechnology

India has achieved several scientific milestones in recent years. The GenomeIndia Project successfully sequenced 10,000 individuals from 99 diverse populations, creating a valuable genetic reference for future research.

In medical biotechnology, India completed its first human gene therapy trial for Severe Hemophilia A, achieving sustained production of Factor VIII. These achievements show the country’s growing strength in advanced life sciences.

Collaboration with ISRO has expanded biotechnology into space medicine and life sciences research, opening new frontiers for innovation.

Digital Governance and the Road Ahead

Alongside SUJVIKA, the Department of Biotechnology also launched a revamped official website aligned with the Digital Brand Identity Manual framework. This step highlights the government’s commitment to transparent digital governance and better access to scientific information.

The SUJVIKA AI Biotech Data Portal Launch stands as a symbol of how data, technology, and policy can come together to support India’s biotechnology ambitions. By empowering stakeholders with clear insights and actionable intelligence, the platform is set to play a key role in shaping the future of India’s bioeconomy.
