National Honour at WINGS INDIA 2026
WINGS INDIA 2026, India’s premier aviation exhibition and conference, is being held from January 29 to January 31 at Begumpet Airport in Hyderabad. The event brings together policymakers, industry leaders, airline operators, manufacturers, and aviation experts from across the country and abroad.
The Uttarakhand Aviation Promotion Award was presented by the Union Civil Aviation Minister to Uttarakhand’s Additional Secretary Ashish Chauhan. The ceremony took place in the presence of Civil Aviation Secretary Sachin Kurve and several senior officials. The award recognises the state’s consistent efforts in building aviation infrastructure and creating an environment that supports both commercial and public service aviation.
Aviation Support for Char Dham Yatra
One of the key reasons behind the Uttarakhand Aviation Promotion Award is the state’s effective use of aviation in managing the Char Dham Yatra. Every year, millions of pilgrims visit Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri. The challenging mountain terrain, unpredictable weather, and limited road access make air services extremely important.
Uttarakhand has expanded helicopter operations to all four Char Dham sites. Several new helipads and heliports have been developed, while existing ones have been upgraded to improve safety and efficiency. Passenger handling systems, crowd management, and emergency response facilities have also been strengthened.
Helicopter services have proved especially helpful for senior citizens, differently-abled pilgrims, and devotees who cannot undertake long and difficult journeys on foot. These services have reduced travel time, eased pressure on roads, and improved overall pilgrimage experience.

Better Safety and Disaster Preparedness
Safety has been a major focus area for Uttarakhand’s aviation strategy. The state has introduced stricter operational guidelines, better weather monitoring systems, and improved coordination between aviation authorities and disaster management agencies.
Helicopters and small aircraft are regularly used for rescue operations during landslides, floods, and other natural disasters. Quick aerial access helps reach affected areas faster than road transport, which is often blocked in hilly regions. Medical evacuation through helicopters has saved many lives, especially in remote villages where hospitals are far away.
These measures have built confidence among passengers and operators, contributing to a stronger aviation ecosystem.
Connecting Remote and Border Areas
Another important factor behind the Uttarakhand Aviation Promotion Award is the state’s push to connect remote and border regions through air services. Several airstrips and airports are being upgraded under the UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik) scheme, which aims to make flying affordable and accessible.
Small airports in hill districts are being revived, while new routes are being introduced to link interior areas with major cities. This improved connectivity supports tourism, trade, and local businesses. It also strengthens national security by ensuring better access to border regions.
Heli-tourism is emerging as a new attraction in Uttarakhand. Scenic helicopter rides over valleys, lakes, and snow-covered peaks are drawing tourists who want a unique travel experience. This adds a new dimension to the state’s tourism offerings.

Vision of the State Government
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami described the Uttarakhand Aviation Promotion Award as a result of collective efforts by the state government, citizens, and aviation partners. He emphasised that aviation has become a key pillar of Uttarakhand’s development strategy.
The Chief Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to making the Char Dham Yatra safer, greener, and more technology-driven. He also stated that the state aims to become India’s leading hub for aviation and heli-tourism.
According to the government, this national recognition will encourage more investment in aviation infrastructure, create employment opportunities, and boost tourism-related businesses. It will also motivate further improvements in air connectivity and public services.
A Model for Mountain States
Uttarakhand’s success shows how smart planning and focused investment can transform aviation into a powerful development tool, even in difficult terrain. The Uttarakhand Aviation Promotion Award stands as an example for other hill and mountain states seeking to improve connectivity and public service delivery.
By combining tourism, pilgrimage management, disaster response, and regional connectivity, Uttarakhand has created a balanced aviation ecosystem that supports both economic growth and social welfare.
