Vinesh Phogat Asian Games Trials: Delhi High Court Allows Wrestler to Compete

Vinesh Phogat Asian Games Trials update as Delhi High Court allows wrestler to participate in Asian Games 2026 selection.

Vinesh Phogat Asian Games Trials became a major topic in Indian sports after the Delhi High Court allowed Olympian wrestler Vinesh Phogat to participate in the Asian Games 2026 selection trials. The trials will be held on 30 and 31 May 2026. The case was linked to the new eligibility rules introduced by the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI).

Why Vinesh Phogat Was Declared Ineligible

The Wrestling Federation of India had introduced revised eligibility rules for the Asian Games selection trials in 2026. According to the new rule, only reigning national champions from the previous season could participate in the trials.

Vinesh Phogat was declared ineligible because she had been on a maternity break since December 2024. Due to this break, she could not meet the federation’s new requirement.

After being denied entry into the trials, the wrestler approached the Delhi High Court seeking permission to compete.

Court Orders Fair and Transparent Trials

A Division Bench of Chief Justice D. K. Upadhyaya and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela heard the appeal against an earlier order passed on 18 May 2026 by a single-judge bench.

The court directed that the selection trials should be video-recorded to maintain transparency. It also ordered the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports to appoint two independent observers.

One observer will be from the Sports Authority of India, while the other will be from the Indian Olympic Association. These directions were given to ensure fairness during the selection process.

The Wrestling Federation of India is the national governing body for wrestling in the country. It works under the National Sports Development Code and manages national competitions and athlete selection.

Sports federations in India have the authority to create eligibility rules for national trials. However, such rules can also face judicial review if questions are raised regarding fairness or equal opportunity.
