Vizhinjam Export Ship Reaches Europe Route

Vizhinjam Export Ship begins Kerala’s direct export journey to Spain, strengthening India’s global maritime trade network.

Vizhinjam Export Ship has marked a historic moment for India’s maritime trade as the first export vessel departed from Kerala’s Vizhinjam International Seaport for Valencia, Spain. The giant container ship MSC Beryl left the port on 1 September 2026 carrying the seaport’s first export consignment, opening a new chapter for Kerala’s direct connection with European markets.

The shipment included eight export containers carrying packaged food products from Thiruvananthapuram and seafood from Kochi. Although the cargo volume was small, the departure is considered a major milestone because it officially began Vizhinjam’s international export journey. The event also highlights India’s growing investment in modern ports and global shipping infrastructure.

Vizhinjam Begins International Export Operations

The departure of MSC Beryl is more than just the movement of containers. It signals that Vizhinjam International Seaport has entered the global export network after years of planning and development.

Located near Thiruvananthapuram on the Arabian Sea coast, Vizhinjam is India’s first deep-water transshipment port designed to handle some of the world’s largest container vessels. Its natural depth allows ultra-large ships to dock without extensive dredging, making it highly attractive for international shipping companies.

The port is expected to reduce India’s dependence on foreign transshipment hubs by allowing cargo to move directly between India and global markets.

First Cargo Heads to Spain

The first Vizhinjam Export Ship carried products that represent Kerala’s strong export economy. The cargo included packaged food items manufactured in Thiruvananthapuram and seafood processed in Kochi before being loaded into refrigerated containers.

The destination was Valencia, one of Spain’s busiest Mediterranean ports. Valencia serves as a gateway for goods entering Southern Europe and connects shipping routes across the Mediterranean, North Africa and the Atlantic region.

By sending its first export shipment directly to Europe, Vizhinjam has demonstrated its ability to participate in long-distance international trade from the very beginning of commercial operations.

Why Vizhinjam Port Is Important

Vizhinjam International Seaport has been developed as a world-class maritime hub. Unlike many Indian ports, it is located very close to the busy East-West international shipping route used by thousands of cargo ships every year.

This strategic location means vessels do not need to travel far from their main route to reach the port, helping reduce travel time and fuel costs. Large container ships that previously stopped at ports outside India for transshipment can now use Vizhinjam as an alternative.

The port has been developed by Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd. with the goal of making India a stronger player in global maritime logistics.

EXIM Operations Expand Trade

The beginning of export-import, or EXIM, operations has transformed Vizhinjam from a construction project into a functioning commercial port.

Kerala officially launched EXIM operations in August 2026, allowing containers to move directly through customs and shipping channels. This step enables exporters from Kerala and neighbouring states to use the port for international trade instead of depending entirely on other major ports.

For businesses dealing in seafood, spices, processed food, rubber products and manufactured goods, shorter transport routes can improve delivery speed and reduce logistics costs.

The launch also supports India’s broader efforts to strengthen exports and improve supply chain efficiency.

MSC Beryl and the European Route

MSC Beryl is a 366-metre-long container vessel operated by Mediterranean Shipping Company under its Himalaya Express service. This shipping service connects Indian ports with important European destinations through regular container routes.

Port officials explained that the cargo was transferred to MSC Beryl after the originally scheduled vessel, MSC Marie Leslie, faced delays. The quick change ensured that exporters did not lose valuable shipping time.

Such flexibility is common in modern container logistics, where shipping schedules are adjusted to keep cargo moving efficiently across international routes.

Expansion Plans Already Underway

Even before the first export shipment, expansion plans for Vizhinjam were already announced. The port’s handling capacity is expected to grow from 1.6 million TEUs to nearly 5.7 million TEUs through additional investment.

A TEU, or Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit, is the standard measurement used for container capacity in global shipping. Increasing TEU capacity will allow Vizhinjam to handle millions of containers every year and compete with some of Asia’s busiest transshipment ports.

The planned expansion includes larger terminals, improved cargo handling systems and better logistics infrastructure for exporters and shipping companies.

Temporary Facilities Support Operations

While the port continues expanding, some facilities are operating in a temporary arrangement. Containers are currently processed through a temporary customs area until a dedicated Container Freight Station becomes fully operational.

This allows exports and imports to continue without waiting for every permanent facility to be completed. Port authorities have stated that the temporary system ensures smooth cargo movement while long-term infrastructure is being developed.

The approach reflects how many modern ports begin commercial operations in phases while gradually expanding capacity and services.

Kerala’s Maritime Economy Gets a Boost

The first Vizhinjam Export Ship is also important for Kerala’s economy. The state has long been known for exports of seafood, spices, coconut products, rubber and processed food. A modern deep-water port gives these industries faster access to international buyers.

The project is expected to generate employment in logistics, shipping, warehousing and port services. Improved connectivity may also encourage manufacturers to establish export-oriented industries near the port.

As global trade continues to shift toward efficient supply chains and larger container vessels, Vizhinjam is emerging as one of India’s most significant maritime gateways. The successful departure of its first export ship shows that the port has officially entered the international shipping network and is ready to support India’s growing role in global trade.
