AI Chip India: Netrasemi Launches A2000
AI Chip India is making headlines as Kerala-based semiconductor startup Netrasemi has launched the country’s first artificial intelligence (AI) system-on-chip (SoC), called the A2000. The launch marks an important step for India’s growing semiconductor and technology industry. The chip successfully completed its silicon bring-up in May 2026 and is expected to support the next generation of smart devices.
The A2000 chip has been designed in India and manufactured using a 12-nanometer process technology. It is built for edge AI applications, which means it can process data directly on devices instead of sending everything to cloud servers. This helps improve speed, security, and power efficiency.
What is Netrasemi?
Netrasemi is a Kerala-based fabless semiconductor startup founded in 2020 by CEO Jyothis Indirabhai. A fabless company focuses on designing chips while outsourcing manufacturing to specialized semiconductor factories.
In a short period, the company has gained attention from investors and technology experts. Netrasemi has raised around ₹125 crore in funding from investors, including Zoho and Unicorn India Ventures. The startup is now becoming an important part of India’s semiconductor ecosystem.

What Makes the A2000 Special?
The A2000 is not just another processor. It combines several advanced technologies into a single chip. These include:
| Feature | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Neural Processing Engine | Supports AI and machine learning tasks |
| Vision Processing Engine | Handles image and video analysis |
| Image Signal Processor | Improves camera and image quality |
| Crypto Engine | Provides security and encryption functions |
By integrating these technologies, the chip can perform complex AI operations while using less power. This makes it suitable for compact devices that need fast and efficient processing.
Applications of the A2000 Chip
The new chip is designed for various edge AI devices. Some of its major applications include:
- Smart surveillance cameras
- Intelligent video gateways
- Edge AI boxes
- Industrial automation systems
- Smart city infrastructure
- Security and monitoring solutions
As AI adoption increases across industries, demand for such specialized chips is expected to grow rapidly.
Why Edge AI Is Important
One of the biggest trends in technology today is Edge AI. Instead of sending data to distant cloud servers, edge devices process information locally.
This approach offers several advantages:
- Faster response times
- Better privacy protection
- Reduced internet dependency
- Lower operating costs
- Improved energy efficiency
With growing demand for real-time AI applications, edge computing is becoming an important part of digital infrastructure worldwide.
India’s Growing Semiconductor Industry
The launch comes at a time when India is focusing heavily on semiconductor development. The government has introduced several programs to encourage domestic chip design and manufacturing.
In 2023, Netrasemi became one of the first four startups selected under the Design Linked Incentive (DLI) Scheme of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. Under this program, the company received financial support worth ₹15 crore.
The initiative aims to strengthen India’s semiconductor capabilities and reduce dependence on imported chips.

Current Developments in India’s Chip Sector
India has recently increased investments in semiconductor manufacturing, chip design, and electronics production. Several global and domestic companies are setting up facilities and research centers across the country.
The rise of artificial intelligence, electric vehicles, smart devices, and data centers is creating new opportunities for chipmakers. Industry experts believe India can become a major semiconductor hub over the next decade.
The launch of the A2000 reflects how Indian startups are now moving beyond software and entering advanced hardware innovation.
Future Plans of Netrasemi
Netrasemi is not stopping with the A2000. The company is already working on new products to expand its AI portfolio.
One of its upcoming projects is the R1000 AI and Machine Learning Microcontroller Unit (MCU), being developed for the Internet of Things (IoT) sensor market in collaboration with the College of Engineering Trivandrum.
The startup is also developing the A4000 edge AI server chip. According to the company, this advanced processor is expected to be ready for fabrication by the second quarter of 2027.
Meanwhile, commercial production of the A2000 is expected to begin by mid-2027 through Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), one of the world’s leading semiconductor foundries.
Significance for India
The launch of India’s first AI system-on-chip highlights the country’s progress in advanced technology development. It demonstrates that Indian startups are capable of designing sophisticated semiconductor solutions for global markets.
As demand for artificial intelligence continues to expand, locally designed chips such as the A2000 could help strengthen India’s position in the global technology landscape while supporting innovation, digital transformation, and future economic growth.
