Ankush Panghal Delivers a Strong Final

The 21-year-old Haryana boxer started the final with an aggressive approach against Kim. Panghal used quick combinations, movement and counter-punching to keep his opponent under pressure.

He won the opening round 4-1 and continued his control in the second round, which all five judges scored in his favour. Panghal maintained the advantage in the final round and secured another 4-1 score from the judges. The overall verdict was 4-0 in his favour.

The victory completed an impressive run at the Asian Games and gave Panghal his first Asian Games gold medal.

A Golden Year for Panghal

The Ankush Panghal victory comes after an excellent 2026 season for the young boxer. Earlier in the year, he won gold in the men’s 80 kg category at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Panghal defeated England’s Dimeji Shittu in the Commonwealth Games final in August. That performance established him as one of India’s leading boxers in the 80 kg category before the Asian Games.

His rise has been rapid. He also won a silver medal at the 2025 World Boxing Cup Finals in Greater Noida after finishing behind England’s Oladimeji Shittu. The strong result at the World Boxing Cup helped draw attention to his potential at major international competitions.

Road to the Asian Games Final

Panghal faced a major challenge in the semifinal when he met Uzbekistan’s Fazliddin Erkinboev. Erkinboev entered the bout as a reigning world champion and had a strong international record.

Panghal lost the opening round but changed his approach and fought his way back into the contest. He eventually won the semifinal 4-1, securing a place in the gold-medal bout. His ability to recover during the fight became one of the important moments of his Asian Games campaign.

The semifinal win gave Panghal the opportunity to fight for India’s first men’s boxing gold at the Asian Games since 2018.

India’s Boxing Hat-Trick

Panghal’s gold came on a remarkable day for Indian boxing. Earlier on October 2, Lovlina Borgohain won the women’s 75 kg gold medal after defeating China’s Bao Ziyi, while Parveen Hooda claimed gold in the women’s 65 kg category.

Panghal then completed the Indian boxing gold-medal hat-trick by winning the men’s 80 kg final. India finished the boxing competition at Aichi-Nagoya with six medals, including three gold medals.

The three gold medals made the 2026 Asian Games India’s most successful edition for boxing in terms of gold medals, according to reports following the competition.

From Haryana to the Asian Games Podium

Panghal comes from Haryana and has quickly moved into the spotlight in Indian boxing. His recent performances show how quickly his career has developed over the past year.

At the 2025 World Boxing Cup Finals, he entered the competition as a late replacement after an injury to Lakshya Chahar. He went on to reach the 80 kg final and win silver, despite being relatively new to the senior international scene.

The result helped Panghal gain valuable experience against top-level opponents. His Commonwealth Games gold later in 2026 gave him another major title before his Asian Games campaign.

A New Chapter for Indian Men’s Boxing

The Ankush Panghal gold also ended an eight-year wait for an Indian male boxer to win Asian Games gold. Amit Panghal had previously won the men’s 49 kg title at the Jakarta Asian Games in 2018.

Since then, Indian boxers had continued to win medals at major events, but another men’s Asian Games boxing gold had remained out of reach. Panghal’s victory in the 80 kg category has now added a new name to India’s list of Asian Games boxing champions.

His success also comes at a time when Indian boxing is producing strong results across several weight categories. The performances of Panghal, Lovlina Borgohain and Parveen Hooda gave India a major boost during the final stages of the Aichi-Nagoya Games.

Panghal’s Style and Approach

Panghal has been noted for his aggressive and confident style. In the Asian Games final, he frequently looked to attack the body while also using quick combinations and movement to avoid clean counters from Kim.

His semifinal against Erkinboev showed another side of his boxing. After falling behind early, he adjusted his strategy and came back to win. Against Kim, he was able to establish control from the beginning and maintain his advantage across all three rounds.

With the Asian Games gold now added to his Commonwealth Games title and World Boxing Cup silver, Panghal has quickly built an impressive international record at the age of 21.
