Overview of ASRAAM Boosts MiG29 Power

ASRAAM is a short-range air-to-air missile developed by MBDA. It is designed for fast combat situations where quick response is needed. The missile is known for its high accuracy and ability to hit targets even at sharp angles, making it effective in dogfights.

Key Features and Capabilities

ASRAAM is about 2.9 metres long and weighs around 88 kg. It carries a powerful explosive warhead and uses an advanced infrared seeker to track enemy aircraft. The missile follows a fire-and-forget system, which means pilots can launch it and move away without guiding it further.

It can travel at speeds above Mach 3 and hit targets more than 25 km away. Its design helps it stay fast and highly manoeuvrable during flight, increasing the chances of a successful strike.

Advanced Combat Features

One of the main strengths of ASRAAM is its Lock-On After Launch feature. This allows the missile to be fired before locking onto the target, giving pilots more flexibility during combat. It can also handle high G-forces, helping it track fast-moving and agile enemy jets.

The heat-seeking guidance system makes sure the missile can detect and hit targets even in complex battle conditions.

The upgrade will replace older missile systems on the MiG-29UPG and improve first-strike ability in close combat. ASRAAM is already used on aircraft like HAL Tejas and SEPECAT Jaguar, showing a move towards using common advanced weapons across the fleet.

This step will improve combat performance and extend the life of existing fighter jets while keeping the Indian Air Force prepared for modern threats.
