BRICS Youth Energy Summit Held in India

BRICS Youth Energy Summit brings young energy leaders together to discuss clean power, innovation and energy access.

BRICS Youth Energy cooperation received a fresh push as India hosted the Eighth BRICS Youth Energy Summit virtually on 17 August 2026 under its BRICS Chairship. The summit brought together more than 100 participants from academia, government institutions, energy organisations and ministries of BRICS member countries. The discussions focused on how young people can contribute to energy security, clean energy, innovation and the transition towards more sustainable energy systems.

Youth Take Part in Energy Discussions

The BRICS Youth Energy Summit provides a platform for young professionals and energy experts to share ideas about the future of the global energy sector. With countries facing growing energy demand, climate risks and changing technology, youth participation has become an important part of energy discussions.

India hosted the summit as part of its 2026 BRICS Chairship. The broader theme of India’s BRICS Chairship is “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.” The energy track was guided by the theme “सर्वेषां ऊर्जम्”, meaning “Energy for All.”

The theme highlighted the need to make reliable and affordable energy available to people while also supporting cleaner and more sustainable energy systems.

Three Major Areas of Discussion

More than 20 youth panellists shared views and experiences from different BRICS countries. The discussions were organised around three major areas: Energy Security and Sustainability, Energy Access and Equity, and Technology and Innovation.

Energy security refers to having a stable and reliable supply of energy. Countries around the world are working to reduce risks linked to disruptions in fuel supplies, changing energy prices and global conflicts.

Sustainability was another important issue. The participants discussed the growing role of renewable energy, energy efficiency and cleaner technologies in reducing environmental pressure.

Energy access and equity focused on ensuring that clean and reliable energy reaches communities that may still have limited access to modern energy services.

Technology and Innovation in Energy

Technology was a major part of the summit’s discussions. Digital systems, smart grids, energy storage and innovative financing are changing the way electricity is produced, distributed and consumed.

Smart grids can help electricity networks respond more efficiently to changing demand. Energy storage can also help manage renewable sources such as solar and wind power, whose output can change depending on weather conditions.

The summit also discussed the need for stronger and more resilient energy supply chains. Cooperation between BRICS countries could support the development and sharing of technologies, expertise and investment in the energy sector.

International Organisations Join the Summit

Representatives from several international energy organisations participated in the virtual event. These included the BRICS Youth Energy Agency, Sustainable Energy for All, the International Solar Alliance and the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).

Their participation added an international perspective to discussions about renewable energy, energy access and the changing global energy landscape.

The International Solar Alliance, in particular, has been working to encourage greater use of solar energy among participating countries. Renewable energy is becoming increasingly important as countries look for ways to meet rising electricity demand while reducing dependence on high-emission fuels.

India Highlights Clean Energy Initiatives

India used the summit to highlight several domestic initiatives connected with clean energy and energy access. These included PM-KUSUM and PM Surya Ghar, which support greater use of solar energy.

PM-KUSUM is connected with the use of solar power in agriculture, while PM Surya Ghar focuses on rooftop solar systems for households. Such programmes are part of India’s wider effort to increase renewable energy use and expand access to cleaner electricity.

India also highlighted the BRICS Digital Centre of Excellence on Smart Grids and Energy Storage, which is linked to cooperation in modern energy technologies.

Youth Events Continue in India

The virtual summit is part of a wider series of BRICS youth activities being organised in India during the country’s 2026 Chairship. The BRICS Youth Council Meeting and Youth Summit were scheduled to take place in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, on 19 and 20 August 2026.

The BRICS Youth Ministers’ Meeting was also scheduled in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, on 22 August 2026.

These events provide young representatives with opportunities to discuss technology, sustainability, energy, innovation and international cooperation. The focus on youth also reflects the growing need for skilled professionals who can work with new energy technologies and help shape future energy policies.

Energy Cooperation in a Changing World

The BRICS Youth Energy Summit comes as countries are dealing with major changes in the energy sector. Solar power, battery storage, electric mobility, smart grids and digital technologies are expanding rapidly, while energy security remains an important concern.

For BRICS countries, cooperation in these areas can support knowledge sharing, research, investment and the development of new technologies. The discussions in India also placed young professionals at the centre of these changes, giving them a platform to contribute ideas on energy security, clean technology and wider access to sustainable energy.
