India is facing a complex security environment, with challenges ranging from cross-border threats to cybercrime and internal unrest. Recognising this reality, the government has chosen to significantly increase funding for agencies responsible for maintaining peace and order.

Record Allocation for Internal Security

The Ministry of Home Affairs has been allocated ₹1,73,802.53 crore for police and internal security in FY27. This is a 7.1 per cent increase compared to the revised estimates of the previous year. The rise shows the importance being given to internal stability as a foundation for economic growth and social development.

A major highlight is the sharp jump in capital expenditure, which has increased by 84 per cent to ₹21,272.47 crore. Capital expenditure supports long-term investments such as buildings, vehicles, weapons, surveillance systems, and digital platforms. This shift indicates that the government is focusing more on strengthening core infrastructure rather than only meeting short-term operational needs.

Intelligence Bureau and Technology Expansion

The Intelligence Bureau has received a significantly higher allocation of ₹6,782.43 crore, compared to ₹4,013.19 crore in FY25. This increase reflects the growing role of intelligence in preventing security threats before they occur.

The capital outlay for the Intelligence Bureau has risen more than eight times to ₹2,549.54 crore. This funding will support the purchase of advanced surveillance tools, secure communication networks, data analytics systems, and artificial intelligence-based monitoring platforms. These technologies will help agencies analyse large volumes of data and detect suspicious activities more quickly.

While funding for the National Intelligence Grid has slightly reduced, officials indicate that the main infrastructure is already in place and the focus is now shifting to efficient operations.

Budget 2026 Border Security Boost

Strong Push for Border Infrastructure

Another major element of the Budget 2026 Border Security Boost is increased spending on border infrastructure. The government has earmarked ₹5,266.51 crore for construction and development projects along India’s borders.

This funding will be used for fencing, border roads, observation towers, floodlighting, and high-tech surveillance systems. Better roads improve troop movement and logistics, while modern surveillance helps monitor border areas in real time. These upgrades are essential for preventing infiltration, smuggling, and other illegal activities.

The increased allocation also reflects special attention to sensitive borders in the north and west, where security challenges are more pronounced.

Higher Funding for Central Armed Police Forces

The seven Central Armed Police Forces will together receive ₹1,16,789.30 crore, which is over 11 per cent higher than the previous year. These forces play a vital role in guarding borders, maintaining internal security, and supporting state police during emergencies.

Higher funding will support recruitment, training, housing, healthcare, and welfare of personnel. It will also allow forces to buy modern weapons, protective gear, drones, vehicles, and communication equipment. Well-equipped and well-trained personnel are essential for quick and effective responses to security threats.

Focus on Women’s Safety and Police Modernisation

The Budget also strengthens programmes related to women’s safety. Funds will support initiatives such as women’s help desks, emergency response systems, and specialised police units to handle crimes against women.

Centrally sponsored schemes for police modernisation in states have been expanded. These schemes help upgrade police stations, introduce digital record systems, and train personnel in cybercrime, financial fraud, and forensic methods. The aim is to build a more professional, technology-driven police force across the country.

Budget 2026 Border Security Boost

Boost to Forensics and Criminal Justice Systems

Forensic capacity modernisation has received ₹500 crore. This will help establish modern forensic laboratories, train experts, and adopt advanced testing technologies. Strong forensic support improves the quality of investigations and increases conviction rates.

At the same time, higher allocations for the Inter-Operable Criminal Justice System will improve data sharing between police, courts, prosecution, and prisons. Faster access to accurate information will speed up investigations and court processes.

Through higher spending, modern technology, and better infrastructure, the Budget 2026 Border Security Boost lays the groundwork for a safer and more secure India. The focus on long-term capacity building ensures that the country is better prepared to face both present and future security challenges.
