Munich to Host the 2028 Final

The Munich Football Arena, widely known as the Allianz Arena, will stage the 2028 Champions League Finals event. The stadium has already hosted two Champions League finals, in 2012 and 2025.

The venue also hosted six matches during UEFA EURO 2024 and the 2025 UEFA Nations League final. Its selection gives Munich another opportunity to host one of European club football’s biggest matches.

The 2028 final will therefore be the third Champions League final held at the Munich Football Arena. The stadium is the home ground of Bayern Munich and is one of Germany’s best-known football venues.

Barcelona Gets the 2029 Final

Barcelona’s Camp Nou has been selected to host the 2029 Champions League final. The stadium has previously staged two European Cup or Champions League finals, in 1989 and 1999.

The 2029 final will mark the return of the competition’s showpiece match to Camp Nou after several decades. The venue has also been undergoing a major redevelopment project, with the work intended to modernise the stadium and increase its capacity.

The renovated Camp Nou is expected to become one of Europe’s largest football stadiums once the redevelopment programme is fully completed.

Madrid Hosts the 2027 Final

Before Munich and Barcelona take their turn, the 2027 Champions League final will be played at Estadio Metropolitano in Madrid.

UEFA has therefore now confirmed a three-year sequence of final venues: Madrid in 2027, Munich in 2028 and Barcelona in 2029.

Estadio Metropolitano has previously hosted the Champions League final in 2019, when Liverpool defeated Tottenham Hotspur. The stadium has a capacity of around 70,000 and has also hosted major international and domestic sporting events.

UEFA Confirms Other Major Final Venues

The September 15 UEFA meeting also decided venues for several other European club competitions.

The 2028 Europa League final will be held at the National Arena in Bucharest, Romania, while the 2029 final will take place at the National Stadium in Belgrade, Serbia. The 2028 Conference League final will be played at Juventus Stadium in Turin, while Budapest’s Puskás Aréna will host the 2029 edition.

UEFA also selected venues for future women’s competitions. Lyon-Décines will host the 2028 Women’s Champions League final, while Cardiff’s National Stadium of Wales will host the 2029 final.

Munich Returns to the Champions League Spotlight

The selection of Munich continues the city’s long connection with major UEFA events. The Munich Football Arena hosted the Champions League final in 2012, when Chelsea defeated Bayern Munich on penalties, and again in 2025, when Paris Saint-Germain won the trophy.

The stadium’s experience with major UEFA events was also strengthened by its role during EURO 2024. Its selection for 2028 means Munich will remain an important host city for European football.

For local authorities and football organisers, hosting a Champions League final involves preparations covering transport, stadium operations, security, accommodation and fan management.

Camp Nou Prepares for a Major Return

Barcelona’s selection comes as Camp Nou continues its transformation through redevelopment. The stadium has been closed for major construction work as part of FC Barcelona’s wider Espai Barça project.

The return of a Champions League final will add another major event to the stadium’s future calendar. Camp Nou has a long history with European football and has previously hosted some of the continent’s biggest matches.

The 1989 European Cup final and the 1999 Champions League final were both held at the Barcelona venue. UEFA’s latest decision means the stadium will once again host the competition’s final in 2029.
