Sports Science Workshop: SAI Brings Modern Training Tools to Combat Sports Coaches

Sports Science Workshop boosts combat sports coaching with modern training, injury prevention, and athlete-focused performance methods.

The Sports Authority of India (SAI) has taken a fresh step to strengthen Indian sports by launching a Sports Science Workshop for combat sports coaches in New Delhi. The four-day programme is being held at SAI’s Sports Science Division and brings together coaches from Boxing, Wrestling, and Judo. The main goal is simple and clear: help coaches use science in everyday training so athletes can perform better and stay healthier.

This workshop reflects SAI’s growing focus on modern, research-backed training methods. Instead of relying only on experience or tradition, the programme encourages coaches to understand how the body works and how training can be planned more effectively.

Turning Science into Daily Coaching Practice

The Sports Science Workshop has been designed as a hands-on learning experience rather than a classroom-style event. Coaches are being guided on how to turn scientific ideas into practical routines that can be used during regular training sessions.

Key areas of learning include strength training, explosive movement drills, and planned workout cycles that match an athlete’s competition calendar. Coaches are learning how different types of exercises affect speed, power, balance, and endurance. The sessions focus on real-life situations faced by combat sport athletes, where quick reactions, strength, and stamina are equally important.

By understanding these methods, coaches can help athletes train smarter instead of harder, reducing unnecessary strain while improving performance.

Building Stronger Athletes Through Planned Training

Sports Science Workshop

A major highlight of the Sports Science Workshop is the focus on training plans that suit the special demands of combat sports. Boxing, wrestling, and judo place heavy pressure on muscles, joints, and the nervous system. The workshop explains how training loads can be adjusted over time so athletes peak at the right moment.

Coaches are also learning how to balance intense training days with recovery periods. This approach helps athletes stay consistent throughout the season and avoid burnout. With better planning, athletes can improve step by step while keeping their bodies fresh for competition.

Supporting the Government’s Vision for Sports Growth

SAI officials shared that the Sports Science Workshop fits well with the vision of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. Senior leadership has repeatedly encouraged coaches to include science-based methods in their daily work. According to SAI, when coaches understand sports science, they can make better decisions that directly benefit athletes.

This coach-led, athlete-focused approach is seen as an important part of improving India’s results on the international stage. By strengthening the support system around athletes, SAI hopes to build long-term success rather than short-term gains.

Reducing Injuries and Improving Athlete Wellbeing

Injury prevention is another key area covered in the Sports Science Workshop. Combat sports often lead to shoulder, joint, and muscle issues due to repeated impact and forceful movements. Coaches are being trained to spot early warning signs and adjust training before injuries become serious.

Sessions also cover proper warm-up routines, stability exercises, and recovery methods. Alongside physical care, the workshop includes discussions on nutrition, mental strength, rest, and fair play practices. Together, these elements aim to support athletes not just during competition, but throughout their careers.

Strong Medical Support Through New Collaboration

The opening session of the Sports Science Workshop featured a talk by Prof. (Dr.) Deepak Joshi from the Sports Injury Centre at Safdarjung Hospital. He highlighted how close teamwork between coaches, doctors, and scientists can change an athlete’s future.

SAI and the Sports Injury Centre are preparing to formalise their partnership through an agreement. Under this plan, athletes will receive advanced medical care when needed, while SAI will manage rehabilitation and safe return-to-play processes. This coordinated system is expected to give Indian athletes quicker treatment and better recovery support.

A Step Towards Smarter Sports Training

Overall, the Sports Science Workshop marks an important move towards smarter and safer training in Indian combat sports. By empowering coaches with scientific knowledge, SAI is helping create an environment where athletes can grow with confidence, strength, and long-term health.
