Cyphostemma Species Discovery in Eastern Ghats
Cyphostemma Species Discovery has gained attention after scientists discovered a new plant species named Cyphostemma annamalaii in the southern Eastern Ghats of Tamil Nadu on 7 May 2026. The plant belongs to the grape family, Vitaceae, and was found on Sanjeevi hill in Villupuram district during botanical research studies.

The newly discovered species is part of the genus Cyphostemma, which includes climbing and shrubby plants. The species name annamalaii was given to honour Rajah Sir Annamalai Chettiyar, the founder of Annamalai University in Chidambaram.
This naming highlights the contribution of educational institutions and researchers in botanical studies across India.
Cyphostemma Species Discovery Site and Habitat
The plant was recorded from Panaimalaipettai in the southern Eastern Ghats at an elevation of 86 metres. The Eastern Ghats are a discontinuous mountain range located along the eastern coast of India.
The habitat of the plant includes tropical dry forests, which support many rare and native species. Scientists believe such regions are important for future biodiversity discoveries.

Features of the New Plant Species
Professor L. Mullainathan, Head of the Department of Botany at Annamalai University, identified the plant as a separate species after detailed study. Researchers noticed differences in leaf progression, fruit shape, and fruit colour compared to related species.
The discovery was officially published in Phytotaxa in March 2026. Herbarium specimens of the plant were also preserved at St. Joseph’s College, Tiruchi, and the Botanical Survey of India, Coimbatore.
Role of Botanical Research in India
India continues to record new plant species through scientific surveys and taxonomic studies. Herbarium specimens play an important role in plant identification and long-term research.
The Botanical Survey of India is the main organisation responsible for plant surveys and botanical documentation in the country. Scientific publications like Phytotaxa help researchers share discoveries with the global scientific community.
