FASTag One Tag System Launched

FASTag One Tag system lets users switch banks without replacing stickers, making digital toll payments easier across India.

FASTag users in India can now change the bank linked to their existing tag without removing the physical sticker from their vehicle. The Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways launched the One Tag system on September 11, 2026, at the Global Fintech Fest 2026 in Mumbai. The new facility is designed to make bank switching easier and reduce the need to replace FASTag stickers.

The new system is being introduced as part of India’s wider move towards digital and more convenient toll collection. It allows vehicle owners to retain the same physical tag while changing the bank that manages the FASTag account.

What Is the One Tag System?

The One Tag system allows FASTag users to digitally move their existing tag from one issuing bank to another. The process is similar to mobile number portability, where a person can change their telecom operator without changing their mobile number.

Under the new system, vehicle owners can link their existing FASTag to a new bank account through the Rajmarg Yatra mobile app. This means users do not have to remove the FASTag sticker from the windshield or purchase another physical tag when they change banks.

The system is expected to make FASTag management simpler for millions of vehicle owners across the country.

Earlier Process for Changing FASTag Banks

Before the introduction of the One Tag system, changing the FASTag issuing bank could be inconvenient. A user generally had to close the existing FASTag account and obtain a new tag from another bank.

The old sticker then had to be removed from the vehicle and replaced with the new one. This process could create additional work for vehicle owners and could also lead to problems when multiple tags were associated with the same vehicle.

The new system removes the need for physical replacement in such cases. Users can now make the change digitally while continuing to use the same FASTag sticker.

FASTag and Digital Toll Collection

FASTag is an electronic toll collection system that uses Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology. A FASTag attached to a vehicle’s windshield communicates with the toll collection system when the vehicle passes through a toll plaza.

The applicable toll amount is automatically deducted from the linked prepaid or bank account. This reduces the need for cash payments and helps vehicles move through toll plazas more quickly.

Digital toll collection has become the main method of collecting highway user fees in India. According to the information released with the One Tag system, digital tolling now accounts for more than 98% of national highway user fees.

Around 13 Crore FASTags Issued

The scale of India’s FASTag network is significant. Around 13 crore FASTags have been issued across the country.

With such a large user base, even small improvements in the system can affect a large number of vehicle owners. The One Tag facility is therefore expected to make the digital tolling system more flexible, particularly for people who want to change their issuing bank.

The facility also supports the government’s broader focus on making highway services more digital and user-friendly.

Rajmarg Yatra App Gets a Bigger Role

The Rajmarg Yatra app, associated with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), will play an important role in the new facility. FASTag users can use the app to link their existing tag with a new bank account.

Moving the process to a digital platform can reduce paperwork and the need for physical replacement of tags. It also gives users a simpler way to manage their highway-related services through a mobile application.

The development is part of a broader effort to connect digital technology with transport infrastructure and highway services.

Focus on Faster Toll Plaza Movement

The One Tag system comes as the government continues to work on reducing delays at toll plazas. The government has set a target of bringing the average waiting time at national highway toll plazas below 10 seconds by the end of the current financial year.

Reducing waiting time is important because toll plazas can experience heavy traffic during busy periods, particularly on major highways and during holiday travel.

FASTag has already reduced dependence on cash payments and helped speed up toll transactions. Further improvements in digital tolling are aimed at making highway travel smoother.

AI-Based Barrier-Free Tolling

The government is also working on the next stage of digital toll collection through an AI-driven barrier-free tolling system.

The proposed technology is aimed at allowing vehicles to move through toll points without having to stop at traditional toll barriers. Such a system could use digital and artificial intelligence-based technologies to identify vehicles and process toll payments automatically.

The move towards barrier-free tolling reflects the changing nature of India’s highway infrastructure. Instead of stopping at toll plazas, vehicles could eventually maintain a more continuous flow while toll charges are collected digitally.

Supporting India’s Digital Transport System

The launch of the One Tag system connects India’s digital payment ecosystem with its transport network. FASTag has already changed how toll payments are made on national highways, and the new facility focuses on improving the flexibility of the system.

For users, the main benefit is the ability to change the backend issuing bank without changing the physical tag. This can save time and avoid the inconvenience of removing and replacing stickers.

The development also comes during a period of rapid growth in digital financial services and fintech solutions in India. The launch at the Global Fintech Fest 2026 in Mumbai highlights the growing connection between financial technology, digital payments and public infrastructure.

Towards More Convenient Highway Payments

The FASTag One Tag system represents another step in the development of India’s electronic toll collection network. By allowing users to switch banks while keeping the same physical tag, the system aims to make FASTag services more convenient.

Along with the government’s efforts to reduce toll-plaza waiting times and develop AI-based barrier-free tolling, the new facility forms part of a larger push towards faster, digital and more seamless highway travel.
