The tournament will begin on 24 June 2027 and conclude with the final on 25 July. The competition will use the 32-team format for the second and final time before the Women’s World Cup expands to 48 teams from the 2031 edition.

FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027 to Cover Eight Cities

The FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027 will be spread across eight Brazilian cities. The host cities are Belo Horizonte, Brasília, Fortaleza, Porto Alegre, Recife, Rio de Janeiro, Salvador and São Paulo.

Each of the eight cities will host at least seven matches during the tournament. FIFA has also planned for every host city to stage at least one knockout-stage match, giving football fans across Brazil an opportunity to watch important matches during the competition.

The distribution of games is designed to take the tournament to different parts of the country and make the event accessible to a wider audience.

Maracanã to Host Opening Match and Final

Rio de Janeiro will have a major role in the tournament. The city’s famous Maracanã Stadium has been selected to host both the opening match and the final.

The stadium is one of the most recognised football venues in the world and has a long history of hosting major international competitions. Holding both the first and last matches at the venue will give Rio de Janeiro a central position in the 2027 tournament.

The third-place play-off will be held in São Paulo, adding another major match to the city’s football calendar.

Knockout Matches Across Brazil

The knockout stage will be distributed among several host cities. The quarter-finals will be played in Belo Horizonte, Fortaleza, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.

The semi-finals will take place in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, while Brasília, Porto Alegre, Recife and Salvador will host matches up to the Round of 16.

This arrangement means that several cities will remain involved throughout the competition rather than hosting only early group-stage games.

32 Teams and 64 Matches

The 2027 competition will feature 32 national teams and a total of 64 matches. The 32-team format was introduced for the 2023 Women’s World Cup and will be used for the second and final time in 2027.

From 2031, the tournament is scheduled to expand to 48 teams. The expansion will increase the number of participating countries and matches, making the 2027 edition the final Women’s World Cup under the current 32-team format.

The larger format is part of FIFA’s broader plans to increase participation and provide more countries with opportunities to compete at the highest level of women’s football.

Brazil Set for Historic Women’s World Cup

Brazil’s selection as host is a major moment for women’s football in South America. The country has a strong football culture and is home to some of the sport’s most famous stadiums and supporters.

The 2027 tournament will also provide an opportunity to increase attention on women’s football in Brazil and across the region. With matches planned in eight cities, the competition is expected to bring international teams and fans to different parts of the country.

The event will also build on the growing global popularity of women’s football, which has seen increasing audiences, investment and media coverage in recent years.

Final Team Schedule to Follow the Draw

Although FIFA has announced the complete match structure and venues, the schedule will later be updated with the names of the teams once the official final draw is held.

The draw is expected to take place later in 2026. It will determine the group-stage matchups and allow FIFA to publish the final version of the schedule with participating countries.

The FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027 will therefore combine a major sporting event with a significant change in the competition’s future format. With 32 teams, 64 matches, eight Brazilian host cities and the historic Maracanã selected for both the opening match and final, the tournament is set to become an important event in the international football calendar.
