GalaxEye OptoSAR Satellite Launch Marks India’s Big Space-Tech Milestone
GalaxEye OptoSAR Satellite was successfully launched on 3 May 2026 through Mission Drishti, becoming the world’s first OptoSAR satellite. The satellite was carried by a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Vandenberg, California, at 12:30 PM IST. Developed by Bengaluru-based startup GalaxEye, the mission is considered India’s largest privately built Earth observation satellite project.

The GalaxEye OptoSAR Satellite combines Electro-Optical (EO) imaging and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) technology in one platform. EO sensors capture images using visible and infrared light, while SAR technology uses microwave radar to capture images even during cloudy weather or at night.
This combination allows the satellite to provide high-quality images in all weather conditions and throughout the day and night.
Mission Drishti and Earth Observation
Mission Drishti is designed as an advanced Earth observation satellite. Earth observation satellites collect data about land, oceans, forests, cities, and weather conditions from space.
The satellite can support several important activities such as:
- Crop and agriculture monitoring
- Flood and disaster management
- Coastal and maritime tracking
- Infrastructure planning
- Defence surveillance
Because of its dual-use capability, the mission has both civilian and defence applications.

GalaxEye’s Journey and ISRO Partnership
GalaxEye is a space-tech startup founded by IIT Madras alumni in Bengaluru. The company spent more than five years developing this advanced satellite technology.
To expand satellite data services globally, GalaxEye partnered with NewSpace India Limited (NSIL), the commercial arm of ISRO. This partnership will help distribute satellite imagery and Earth observation data worldwide.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the successful launch a major step in India’s growing space journey.
SpaceX Falcon 9 and Global Launch Support
The satellite was launched using the reusable Falcon 9 rocket developed by SpaceX. The launch took place at Vandenberg Space Force Base, a well-known space launch facility in the United States.
Falcon 9 is widely used for commercial satellite launches because of its reusable rocket technology and reliable launch performance.
Future Uses of GalaxEye OptoSAR Satellite
The GalaxEye OptoSAR Satellite is expected to improve India’s capabilities in satellite imaging and real-time monitoring. Its advanced imaging system can help government agencies, defence forces, farmers, and disaster response teams make faster and better decisions.
The successful Mission Drishti launch also highlights the growing strength of India’s private space sector in the global space industry.
