Instituted in 2011, the IFFCO Sahitya Samman recognises Hindi writers whose works vividly capture rural life and agrarian themes. Over the years, it has become one of the most prestigious awards for Hindi literature that focuses on village narratives, farmers’ struggles, and the social and cultural fabric of rural India.

The award includes a citation, a memento, and a cash prize of ₹11 lakh. Past recipients have included literary stalwarts such as Vidyasagar Nautiyal, Shekhar Joshi, Sanjeev, Mithileshwar, Shivmurti, Madhu Kankaria, and Jayanandan. By celebrating these writers, IFFCO underscores the importance of literature in bridging urban and rural experiences and giving voice to the stories of India’s heartland.

Maitreyi Pushpa: A Voice of Rural India

Maitreyi Pushpa, born on 30 November 1944 in Sikurra village of Aligarh district, spent her early years in Khilli village near Jhansi. She holds a master’s degree in Hindi literature from Bundelkhand College, Jhansi.

Her literary journey spans decades and includes novels, short stories, autobiographical writings, poetry, plays, memoirs, reportage, and women-centric literature. Pushpa’s works are celebrated for their authenticity, social awareness, and sensitive portrayal of rural life, particularly the experiences of women in Bundelkhand. Her narratives delve into the struggles, joys, and complexities of village life, making her a significant voice in contemporary Hindi literature.

Some of her notable works include novels and short stories that explore social injustice, gender dynamics, and agrarian challenges. Pushpa’s literature not only entertains but also educates readers about the realities faced by rural communities, often overlooked in mainstream narratives.

IFFCO Young Literary Award 2025

Alongside the Sahitya Samman, the IFFCO Young Literary Award 2025 was presented to Ankita Jain for her book “Oh Re! Kisan”. Ankita Jain’s literary career began as a research associate and assistant professor, but she later dedicated herself to full-time writing.

Her debut book, “Aisi Vaisi Aurat”, became a Jagran–Nielsen bestseller, followed by works like “Main Se Maa Tak”, “Baheliye”, “Mohalla Salimbagh”, and the children’s novel “Aatanki Mor”. Ankita’s writings continue the tradition of addressing social themes and giving voice to contemporary issues, making her a promising talent in modern Hindi literature.

The award ceremony was graced by IFFCO Chairman Dilip Sanghani, who lauded both Maitreyi Pushpa and Ankita Jain for their literary achievements. He expressed confidence in Ankita Jain’s future contributions to Hindi literature. IFFCO Managing Director K. J. Adding a cultural dimension to the event, the Flying Feathers Art Association presented a theatrical adaptation of Maitreyi Pushpa’s story “Gunahgar”.
