India Green Hydrogen Port: VOC Port Pioneers Clean Energy Initiatives in Tamil Nadu
India Green Hydrogen Port initiative marks a major milestone in the country’s pursuit of clean and sustainable energy solutions. With the launch of the first port-based green hydrogen pilot project at V.O. Chidambaranar (VOC) Port in Tamil Nadu, India is taking significant steps to reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainable port operations. This project aligns seamlessly with national goals under the Viksit Bharat 2047 mission and the Sagarmala programme, reflecting India’s commitment to a cleaner and greener future.

VOC Port now hosts a green hydrogen facility capable of producing 10 Nm³ per hour. The project, established at an investment of ₹3.87 crore, powers streetlights and an electric vehicle (EV) charging station within the port colony. This makes VOC Port the first Indian port to generate green hydrogen onsite. The initiative not only supports India’s clean energy transition but also strengthens the Coastal Green Shipping Corridor, connecting Kandla and Tuticorin for sustainable shipping practices.
Green Methanol Bunkering Facility
In addition to the hydrogen project, VOC Port has laid the foundation for a Green Methanol Bunkering and Refuelling Facility. With a capacity of 750 m³ and an estimated cost of ₹35.34 crore, this facility is set to make VOC Port a leading hub for green bunkering in South India. It encourages the adoption of sustainable fuel usage in maritime transport, supporting cleaner shipping operations across the region.
Renewable Energy and Infrastructure Developments
VOC Port is also expanding its renewable energy footprint with a 400 KW rooftop solar plant, bringing its total rooftop solar power capacity to 1.04 MW—the highest among Indian ports. Additional infrastructure developments include a ₹24.5 crore link conveyor to improve coal handling efficiency by 0.72 million metric tonnes per annum. The port has initiated foundations for a 6 MW wind farm, a ₹90 crore multi-cargo berth, a 3.37 km four-lane road, and even a maritime heritage museum, reflecting a comprehensive approach to modernization and sustainability.
VOC Port’s Strategic Importance

Situated in Tuticorin on the Coromandel Coast, VOC Port is one of India’s 13 major ports and plays a crucial role in regional trade, coal handling, and container movement. Renamed in honour of freedom fighter V.O. Chidambaranar, the port has undergone transformative growth under the Sagarmala programme. Over ₹16,000 crore has been invested in modernisation and capacity enhancement, positioning the port as a strategic hub for South India.
Alignment with National Missions
These initiatives at VOC Port strongly support the Viksit Bharat 2047 vision, which focuses on speed, scale, sustainability, and self-reliance. By fostering innovation in port infrastructure and clean energy, India aims to position itself among the world’s top shipbuilding nations by 2030 and further advance by 2047. The projects are expected to generate employment, attract global investments, and enhance Tamil Nadu’s contribution to the country’s economic growth trajectory.
Collaborations and Future Prospects
VOC Port has signed Memorandums of Understanding with key organizations to strengthen infrastructure and sustainability efforts. An MoU with Indian Port Rail and Ropeway Corporation Ltd will enhance rail connectivity to the Outer Harbour project, while a partnership with NTPC focuses on promoting green mobility initiatives within the port. These collaborations are set to boost operational efficiency and expand India’s leadership in sustainable maritime infrastructure.
India Green Hydrogen Port efforts at VOC Port showcase a comprehensive strategy combining renewable energy, green fuels, and state-of-the-art infrastructure. The projects represent a transformative approach to port management, ensuring environmentally responsible growth while contributing to India’s long-term economic and strategic objectives. VOC Port’s leadership in adopting green hydrogen and methanol bunkering technologies sets a benchmark for other Indian ports, demonstrating the country’s resolve to achieve its sustainability and energy transition goals.
