Background of the Lamitiye Exercise

The Lamitiye military exercise is a biennial training programme conducted between India and Seychelles. The word “Lamitiye” means “friendship” in the Creole language, highlighting the friendly ties shared by the two nations.

The exercise was first introduced in 2001 and since then it has become an important defence engagement between India and Seychelles. It provides an opportunity for both countries to strengthen their military cooperation and develop better operational understanding.

Participation from the Indian Armed Forces

India has sent a joint contingent representing all three services of its armed forces. The Indian Army team includes soldiers from the Assam Regiment, known for their experience in various military operations.

The Indian Navy is participating with the deployment of INS Trikand, a stealth frigate that supports maritime operations during the exercise. The Indian Air Force is also involved and has deployed a C-130 aircraft to assist with logistics and training activities.

This combined participation highlights India’s commitment to strengthening defence ties with Seychelles.

Joint Training and Military Coordination

During the 12-day exercise, soldiers from both countries will participate in several training activities. These include tactical drills, field training exercises, combat discussions, lectures, case studies, and demonstrations.

The training is mainly focused on handling security challenges in semi-urban environments. It also allows troops to share knowledge about modern military strategies, equipment, and operational methods used during security operations.

Such joint training helps both forces improve teamwork and coordination during real-life missions.

Boost to Strategic Cooperation

India Seychelles Exercise Lamitiye 2026 plays an important role in strengthening strategic cooperation between the two nations. Through this exercise, both countries aim to enhance their ability to work together during peacekeeping and security missions.

The programme also promotes the sharing of operational experiences and best practices between the two armed forces. As a result, the exercise not only improves military readiness but also deepens the long-standing friendship between India and Seychelles in the Indian Ocean region.
