India New Zealand Sports Cooperation Talks Mark 100 Years of Sporting Ties
India New Zealand Sports Cooperation has gained new momentum as both countries started discussions to expand their partnership in sports. A high-level meeting was held in New Delhi where India’s Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Mansukh Mandaviya, met a delegation from New Zealand to explore new opportunities for collaboration.

Celebrating 100 Years of Sporting Relations
The year 2026 marks 100 years of sporting relations between the two countries. The connection began in 1926 when the Indian Army hockey team toured New Zealand. This historic tour helped build early sports exchanges between the two nations.
Over the decades, sporting ties have grown through matches, athlete exchanges and cooperation between sports organisations. The centenary year provides a new opportunity to further strengthen these connections.

High-Level Delegations Attend the Meeting
The Indian delegation included officials from the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Sports Authority of India and the Indian Olympic Association.
The New Zealand side was led by Associate Minister for Sport and Recreation Chris Bishop. The delegation also included New Zealand’s High Commissioner to India Patrick John Rata and former international cricketer Ross Taylor. Representatives from Sport New Zealand and Paralympics New Zealand also joined the discussion.
Key Sports Areas for Collaboration
During the talks, both countries identified several sports where cooperation can grow. These include rugby, rowing, canoeing, sailing, athletics and cycling.
The two sides also discussed organising joint training programmes, athlete exchange initiatives and sports events. These activities will help athletes learn from each other and improve performance.
India–New Zealand Centenary Sports Cooperation Programme 2026
As part of the celebrations, both countries proposed launching the India–New Zealand Centenary Sports Cooperation Programme 2026. This programme will include joint training camps, coaching exchanges and collaboration in sports science and analytics.
Another key idea is to organise an India–New Zealand Sports and Culture Week in different cities of both countries. This event will celebrate sporting traditions and encourage stronger cultural connections between the people.
India New Zealand Sports Cooperation Strengthens Sports Diplomacy
Sports diplomacy is becoming an important tool for building international partnerships. Through the India New Zealand Sports Cooperation initiative, both countries aim to promote friendship, knowledge sharing and long-term collaboration in sports.
A Joint Working Group will also be created to monitor the progress of these initiatives and ensure that the cooperation programme is successfully implemented.
