The men’s team created history during the early Olympic years, while the women’s team has made important progress in recent decades.

India’s Golden Era in Men’s Hockey

The golden era of Indian Hockey began in the early years of the Olympic Games. India won its first Olympic gold medal in men’s hockey at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics. The team continued its success by winning gold in 1932 at Los Angeles and 1936 at Berlin.

India also won three successive Olympic gold medals after independence in 1948, 1952 and 1956. The team later won gold at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics and the 1980 Moscow Olympics. In total, India has won eight Olympic gold medals in men’s hockey.

Major Dhyan Chand was one of the most important figures of this period. Popularly known as “The Wizard,” he was famous for his excellent ball control, quick movements and goal-scoring ability. His performances helped make Indian hockey famous across the world.
