India’s 44 GW Solar Milestone Boosts Renewable Energy Growth
India’s 44 GW Solar Milestone marked a major achievement in the country’s renewable energy journey in 2025. India added 44 gigawatts of solar capacity during the year, taking the total installed solar power capacity to 150 GW. By March 2026, India’s installed solar capacity reached 150.2 GW AC, making the country the world’s third-largest producer of solar power.

Solar capacity refers to the total electricity generation capacity produced from solar energy systems such as photovoltaic panels. The addition of 44 GW in one year placed India among the top countries expanding solar energy rapidly.
The growth also showed India’s strong push towards clean and sustainable energy. While the United States usually adds around 30 GW to 40 GW of solar capacity annually, China and the European Union continued to record even higher yearly additions.
Government Schemes Supporting Solar Growth
Several government schemes played an important role in achieving India’s solar expansion. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy handled the renewable energy policies behind this growth.
The PM Surya Ghar scheme encouraged rooftop solar installations across households. The PM-KUSUM scheme supported farmers through solar pumps and decentralised solar systems. At the same time, the Production Linked Incentive scheme helped increase domestic manufacturing of solar equipment in India.
These schemes together strengthened India’s renewable energy infrastructure and reduced dependence on traditional energy sources.

Rising Solar Installations in 2026
India continued its rapid solar growth in 2026 as well. The country installed 14.4 GW of solar photovoltaic systems during the first quarter of 2026. This was almost double the 7.7 GW installed during the same period in 2025.
Solar photovoltaic systems generate electricity directly from sunlight using semiconductor-based solar cells. The increasing use of these systems showed growing investment in clean energy technology.
Renewable Energy Share in India
India’s total renewable energy capacity, including large hydro projects, reached 276.5 GW by the end of the first quarter of 2026. Renewable energy also accounted for 51.7% of the country’s total installed power capacity.
This achievement highlighted India’s progress toward becoming a global leader in renewable energy production.
Organisations Tracking Solar Growth
Several organisations monitor India’s solar energy market and renewable energy trends. Mercom India and JMK Research regularly publish reports on solar installations and market growth.
Nat-Connect, a non-governmental organisation based in Thane, also works on environmental and sustainability-related issues connected with renewable energy development.
India’s 44 GW Solar Milestone Globally
India’s 44 GW Solar Milestone placed the country ahead of the usual yearly solar additions recorded in the United States. However, China and the European Union still remained larger contributors in terms of annual solar capacity growth.
The expansion of solar energy is measured in installed gigawatts and is widely used to compare renewable energy progress among nations.
