SEHAT Initiative Launch: India Links Agriculture with Public Health
The SEHAT Initiative Launch marks an important step in India’s healthcare and agriculture sectors. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) launched SEHAT, which stands for Science Excellence for Health through Agricultural Transformation, on 11 May 2026 in New Delhi. The programme aims to connect agriculture, nutrition, and public health for a healthier India.

SEHAT is a national mission-mode programme jointly developed by ICMR and ICAR. The initiative focuses on improving public health through better agricultural practices and scientific research. It supports India’s shift from curative healthcare to preventive healthcare.
The programme is designed to reduce health problems by improving nutrition and food quality across the country.
Main Areas of Focus
The SEHAT Initiative Launch gives priority to several important areas connected with agriculture and health. These include:
- Biofortified crops
- Integrated farming systems
- Occupational health of farmers and agricultural workers
- One Health preparedness
The programme also aims to tackle malnutrition and non-communicable diseases like diabetes, hypertension, and cancer.
Role of Biofortified Crops
ICAR has already developed 203 biofortified crop varieties in India. These crops contain higher levels of essential nutrients and micronutrients. Under SEHAT, these varieties will undergo clinical validation with the support of ICMR.
Biofortification helps improve the nutritional value of staple foods through scientific breeding and agricultural methods. This can support better nutrition among people, especially in rural areas.

One Health and Integrated Farming
One Health is an approach that connects human health, animal health, and environmental health. The SEHAT programme promotes this system to improve disease preparedness and overall public health safety.
Integrated farming systems are also a key part of the initiative. These systems combine crops, livestock, fisheries, and related farming activities on the same farm. This method improves farm productivity and supports sustainable agriculture.
SEHAT and India’s Public Health Goals
India currently faces a dual burden of malnutrition and lifestyle diseases. The SEHAT Initiative Launch aims to address both challenges through scientific planning and coordinated action.
The programme follows a whole-of-government and whole-of-system approach. It combines agriculture, nutrition, and healthcare research to create long-term health benefits for people across the country.
