Karnataka Bharat Gaurav Train Book Launched
Karnataka Bharat Gaurav has taken centre stage with the launch of a special coffee table book that celebrates one of Indian Railways’ most unique pilgrimage tourism projects. Union Minister of State for Railways and Jal Shakti, V. Somanna, unveiled the book titled “Karnataka Bharat Gaurav Train: Journey of a Thousand Shrines” at Rail Bhawan on 23 February 2026. The publication captures the journey, planning, and success of the Karnataka-based pilgrimage train introduced under the broader Indian Railways tourism initiative.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! The book presents a visual and written account of how a regional idea turned into a nationwide cultural travel movement. According to the Minister, the publication reflects how faith, heritage, and modern railway infrastructure can come together to create meaningful travel experiences for ordinary citizens. It also highlights how rail tourism is becoming more people-centric in recent years.
A Cultural Tourism Movement
The Karnataka Bharat Gaurav Train was introduced under the Indian Railways Bharat Gaurav Policy, which encourages theme-based tourism trains across India. Unlike regular passenger trains, these services are designed around specific themes such as pilgrimage, heritage, or historical circuits. The Karnataka version focuses primarily on spiritual tourism and aims to make long-distance temple visits affordable and comfortable.
The concept was developed and guided by Dr. Anup Dayanand, a retired Indian Railway Traffic Service officer, who believed that pilgrimage travel should not be a financial burden for families. The idea was to provide a well-organised, safe, and affordable package so that people, especially senior citizens and first-time travellers, could visit sacred places without stress.

In recent years, spiritual tourism has gained momentum across India. With improved infrastructure, better roads, new railway stations, and digital booking systems, pilgrimage routes have become more accessible. The Karnataka Bharat Gaurav Train fits into this larger transformation in travel patterns.
Connecting Karnataka to Sacred Destinations
The train operates multiple themed circuits connecting devotees from Karnataka to some of the most sacred destinations in the country. Popular routes include Kashi Darshan, Jyotirlinga Darshan, Shakti Peetha Yatra, Dakshina Yatra, Dwarka Yatra, and Puri Jagannath Yatra.
One of the most sought-after destinations is Varanasi, home to the famous Kashi Vishwanath Temple. Many pilgrims from Karnataka have travelled there through the Kashi Darshan circuit. Other circuits cover important shrines across states such as Gujarat, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, and Madhya Pradesh.
The initiative also supports national integration campaigns like Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat and Dekho Apna Desh, which encourage citizens to explore different parts of the country. By travelling together, people from various regions share traditions, food habits, and cultural practices, strengthening bonds across states.
All-Inclusive and Affordable Travel
One of the biggest strengths of the Karnataka Bharat Gaurav Train is its all-inclusive package model. The cost of the journey covers train travel, vegetarian meals, hotel accommodation, local transport, tour guides, and sightseeing arrangements. Pilgrims do not have to worry about separate bookings or hidden expenses.
Special attention has been given to comfort. Clean coaches, organised boarding systems, medical support when needed, and dedicated volunteers ensure that elderly passengers feel safe and supported. For many travellers, this is their first long-distance train journey outside Karnataka.
State support and subsidies have played a key role in keeping ticket prices affordable. The aim is to make spiritual travel possible for families from middle- and lower-income backgrounds. In a time when travel costs are rising, such structured packages offer financial relief.
Growing Popularity and Impact
So far, 46 trips have been successfully completed under the Karnataka Bharat Gaurav initiative. Nearly 29,000 pilgrims have travelled through these circuits. The project has generated over ₹25 crore in revenue for Indian Railways, showing that cultural tourism can also be economically sustainable.
Beyond revenue, the social impact has been significant. Many participants describe the journey as life-changing. Travelling in a group setting creates a sense of community. People sing devotional songs, share meals, and exchange stories throughout the journey.
The initiative also supports local economies in destination cities. Hotels, transport operators, local guides, and small vendors benefit from the steady flow of pilgrims. This aligns with the government’s larger goal of boosting domestic tourism and supporting small businesses.
Railways as a Cultural Bridge
Indian Railways has traditionally been seen as a transport service connecting cities and towns. However, projects like Karnataka Bharat Gaurav show how it is evolving into a cultural bridge. By designing theme-based journeys, the Railways is responding to changing travel preferences in India.

In recent years, India has seen a revival of interest in temple corridors, heritage sites, and spiritual circuits. Projects like the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor and improved facilities at pilgrimage centres have drawn large crowds. The Karnataka Bharat Gaurav Train complements these developments by providing structured access to such destinations.
The coffee table book launched by V. Somanna captures these developments through photographs, personal stories, and behind-the-scenes details. It presents the train as more than just a mode of transport. It becomes a moving symbol of faith, unity, and shared heritage.
A Model for Other States
The success of Karnataka’s initiative may inspire similar efforts in other states. The Bharat Gaurav Policy allows private operators, state governments, and railway units to propose themed trains tailored to regional interests. As domestic tourism continues to grow, more states may explore pilgrimage and heritage-based train models.
The Karnataka Bharat Gaurav project shows that with proper planning, coordination, and affordability, large-scale pilgrimage travel can be organised smoothly. It blends tradition with modern logistics, reflecting how India’s transport system is adapting to new expectations.
With rising interest in cultural roots and spiritual journeys, the Karnataka Bharat Gaurav Train stands as an example of how rail travel can serve both emotional and practical needs. The newly launched book documents this journey in detail, ensuring that the story behind the wheels continues to inspire future initiatives across the country.
