Youngest Winner in History

At just 44, Madani is the youngest person to receive this award in its 35-year history. He is also the first United Nations official and former politician to win it. The prize committee praised his ability to connect science, policy, and public awareness, even in difficult political situations.

Innovative Work in Water Science

Madani is known for his idea of “water bankruptcy.” This concept explains that water scarcity is not just temporary but a long-term failure in managing water resources. He has warned that the world is now facing global water bankruptcy, where many rivers and underground water sources cannot recover.

His work uses modern methods like game theory and decision science to solve water conflicts and improve sharing of resources between regions and countries.

Kaveh Madani Water Prize 2026: Career Challenges

Madani’s journey has not been easy. In 2017, he returned to Iran to work on environmental reforms. However, he faced political pressure, was detained, and later forced to leave the country in 2018. After that, he continued his research and later joined the United Nations, where he now leads global water initiatives.

Role in Global Water Leadership

Born in Tehran in 1981, Madani studied civil engineering and worked in top global institutions. Today, he leads UNU-INWEH, often called the UN’s water think tank. He is also active on digital platforms, helping people understand water issues in simple ways.

The award will be officially presented during World Water Week in Stockholm, Sweden, in August 2026. His work continues to inspire better water management and global cooperation.
