Kerala CM V.D. Satheesan Becomes New Chief Minister
The Congress party announced Kerala CM V.D. Satheesan as the new Chief Minister of Kerala on 14 May 2026. The decision came after the United Democratic Front (UDF) won a huge victory in the Kerala Assembly elections by securing 102 out of 140 seats. This victory ended the ten-year rule of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) led by Pinarayi Vijayan.

V. D. Satheesan became the 13th Chief Minister of Kerala. He was born on 31 May 1964 and is known as a senior Congress leader and lawyer. Before becoming Chief Minister, he served as the Leader of the Opposition in the Kerala Legislative Assembly from 2021 to 2026.
Satheesan has represented the Paravur Assembly constituency since 2001. In the 2026 elections, he won his sixth consecutive term, showing his strong support among voters.
Big Victory for United Democratic Front
The United Democratic Front, led by the Indian National Congress, achieved a major success in the 2026 Kerala Assembly elections. The alliance won 102 seats in the 140-member assembly, crossing the majority mark of 71 seats with ease.
The victory is seen as an important political change in Kerala because the UDF defeated the ruling Left Democratic Front after ten years in power.
