Under the Maharashtra CBG Policy 2026, the government has set aside ₹500 crore for the financial year 2026–27. This funding will support projects through Public-Private Partnership (PPP) and Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM). These models aim to reduce financial risks and attract private investment for setting up compressed biogas plants across Maharashtra.
Waste-to-Energy Focus
The Maharashtra CBG Policy 2026 highlights the importance of converting waste into energy. The state has 423 urban local bodies that produce large amounts of waste daily. Much of this waste is organic and can be used to produce biogas. The policy encourages proper waste segregation so that wet waste can be processed efficiently instead of being dumped in landfills.

Reducing Pollution and Supporting Farmers
One of the key goals of the Maharashtra CBG Policy 2026 is to reduce landfill pressure and cut harmful methane emissions. Methane is a strong greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming. The policy also promotes the use of agricultural waste, which helps farmers earn extra income and reduces stubble burning.
Link with GOBARdhan and Circular Economy
The Maharashtra CBG Policy 2026 is aligned with the GOBARdhan Scheme. It supports building infrastructure for waste collection and processing. This approach strengthens the circular economy by turning waste into fuel, improving sanitation, and increasing renewable energy production in the state.
