MBDA-IAF MICA MRO Pact Strengthens India’s Defence Capability

MBDA-IAF MICA MRO Pact boosts India’s defence self-reliance with domestic missile maintenance capability.

MBDA-IAF MICA MRO Pact marks a major step in boosting India’s defence self-reliance. European missile maker MBDA signed an agreement with the Indian Air Force (IAF) on 6 May 2026 to establish a domestic Maintenance, Repair, and Mid-Life Overhaul (MRO) facility for the MICA missile system in India.

MBDA-IAF MICA MRO Pact Signed

Under the agreement, the new MRO facility will be set up, operated, and maintained by the Indian Air Force. MBDA will provide industrial machinery, technical support, tooling, training, and important technical data packages.

This move will help India maintain and service MICA missiles within the country instead of depending on foreign facilities. It is also expected to improve operational readiness of the Indian Air Force.

What is the MICA Missile System?

MICA is a French-origin air-to-air missile designed for both short-range and beyond-visual-range combat. The missile is widely known for its accuracy and advanced targeting ability.

The Indian Air Force uses MICA missiles on Rafale fighter jets and upgraded Mirage 2000 aircraft. The missile became part of the IAF fleet in 2016 after the Mirage 2000 upgrade programme.

Role of MRO in Defence Systems

Maintenance, Repair, and Mid-Life Overhaul (MRO) plays an important role in extending the service life of defence equipment. In missile systems, MRO activities include inspection, repair, testing, refurbishment, and replacement of damaged components.

The new Indian MRO facility will help keep the MICA missile system combat-ready for a longer period and reduce dependence on overseas support.

Boost to Atmanirbhar Bharat

The MBDA-IAF MICA MRO Pact supports the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2020. The programme focuses on strengthening domestic manufacturing, maintenance, and technology development across sectors, including defence.

By developing local servicing capability, India aims to improve defence self-reliance and build long-term technical expertise within the country.

Long Partnership Between MBDA and IAF

MBDA has worked with the Indian Air Force for more than 50 years. The company has supplied missile systems such as Meteor, ASRAAM, and Mistral to India.

The new MRO agreement further strengthens cooperation between MBDA and the Indian Air Force while helping India build advanced defence maintenance infrastructure.
