This registration gives legal ownership to the farming community of Nagaur district. It recognises the hard work of farmers who have protected and developed this crop for many years.

Recognition Under the Law

Nagauri Paan Methi, scientifically known as Trigonella corniculata L., is now protected under the PPV&FR Act, 2001. The farmers of Nagaur are now the official custodians of this crop.

The application was led by Geeta Devi, a woman farmer and local leader. This shows how farmers, especially women, are playing a key role in agriculture and seed conservation.

Protection for Farmers

This registration gives many benefits to farmers. It protects them from biopiracy and stops others from using the crop without permission. Farmers are also safe from fake or low-quality seeds in the market.

If companies use this crop for research or business, the farming community will get fair benefits. This ensures that farmers are rewarded for their knowledge and efforts.

Empowering Women and Communities

The recognition is very special as 2026 is declared the International Year of Women Farmers. It highlights the role of women in saving traditional crops and supporting rural farming.

This step also strengthens community rights and supports farmers who continue traditional farming practices.

Future Opportunities for Growth

Nagauri Paan Methi Registration can help the crop get a Geographical Indication (GI) tag in the future. This will increase its value in the market and may help farmers earn better income.

The crop is already listed by the Spices Board of India, and this recognition helps correct its identity, which was earlier confused with Kasuri Methi.
