P. Kumaran Takes Charge in London

P. Kumaran presented his credentials to Vice-Marshal of the Diplomatic Corps, Scott Furssedonn-Wood, in London. His full diplomatic tenure will officially begin after presenting credentials to King Charles III, the head of state of the United Kingdom.

The appointment is an important step in strengthening India-UK diplomatic relations.

Indian Foreign Service Career of P. Kumaran

P. Kumaran is a 1992-batch officer of the Indian Foreign Service (IFS). Over the years, he has served in several important diplomatic positions for India.

Before this new role, he worked as Secretary (East) in the Ministry of External Affairs. In this position, he handled important matters related to India’s foreign policy and international relations.

Previous Diplomatic Postings

Before the P. Kumaran London Posting, he served as India’s Ambassador to Qatar from 2016 to 2020. Later, he became India’s High Commissioner to Singapore from 2020 to 2023.

A High Commissioner represents one Commonwealth country in another Commonwealth nation, while an Ambassador serves in non-Commonwealth countries.

India and UK Diplomatic Relations

The Indian High Commission in London is one of India’s oldest diplomatic missions in Europe. India and the United Kingdom maintain High Commissions instead of embassies because both countries are members of the Commonwealth of Nations.

The new P. Kumaran London Posting is expected to further improve cooperation between the two countries in trade, education, technology, and cultural exchange.

Tributes Paid by P. Kumaran in London

After taking charge, P. Kumaran paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at Tavistock Square and Parliament Square in central London. He also visited Ambedkar House to honor Babasaheb B.R. Ambedkar.

These places are important landmarks connected with Indian history and leaders in the United Kingdom.

Other Key Diplomatic Updates

At the same time, senior diplomat Vikram Doraiswami has taken over as India’s Ambassador to China. The Ministry of External Affairs continues to make important diplomatic appointments to strengthen India’s global presence.
