Rohit Jain RBI Deputy Governor Appointed for Three-Year Term
The Government of India has approved the appointment of Rohit Jain as the new Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). Currently serving as Executive Director at the RBI, he will take charge for a period of three years from May 3, 2026, or from the date he joins. The appointment shows the RBI’s focus on experienced internal leadership.

Rohit Jain has nearly 30 years of experience in the Reserve Bank of India. During his long career, he has worked in important areas such as banking supervision, financial regulation, and institutional management.
As Executive Director since December 2020, Jain handled major supervisory responsibilities. His role included monitoring banking activities and maintaining financial stability in the country. His promotion to Deputy Governor reflects the RBI’s trust in his experience and leadership abilities.
Rohit Jain to Replace T. Rabi Sankar
Rohit Jain will replace T. Rabi Sankar, whose tenure as Deputy Governor ended after receiving extensions in 2024 and 2025. Sankar served in the post since 2021 and managed important departments related to financial markets, foreign exchange, fintech, and payment systems.
The transition is expected to continue stability within the RBI leadership structure while allowing new departmental changes in the coming months.

Senior RBI Official Chosen for Top Role
Jain was selected from among several senior Executive Directors of the RBI, including Vivek Deep, Radha Shyam Ratho, and Ajay Kumar. His appointment follows the RBI’s tradition of promoting experienced internal officers to top positions.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved the decision, which is responsible for appointing senior government officials and bureaucrats in India.
Rohit Jain RBI Deputy Governor Leadership and Responsibilities
The Reserve Bank of India was established in 1935 and later nationalised in 1949. The RBI Governor is assisted by four Deputy Governors who oversee important departments linked to banking regulation, monetary policy, financial supervision, and payment systems.
With Rohit Jain joining the leadership team, the RBI is expected to strengthen its regulatory and supervisory functions further. He will work alongside Deputy Governors S. C. Murmu, Poonam Gupta, and Swaminathan J. in guiding India’s financial system.
