Why the Crackdown Happened

Many resorts were built without permission inside protected forest areas. These resorts disturbed animals and damaged the natural environment. By sealing them, the government wants to reduce human pressure and protect the fragile ecosystem.

Location and Importance

Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve lies where the Eastern and Western Ghats meet. It is also part of the famous Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. This area acts as a natural pathway for animals like tigers and elephants to move between forests. It connects important reserves such as Mudumalai, Bandipur, and BRT Tiger Reserve, helping animals stay healthy and diverse.

Land, Climate and Rivers

The reserve has hills and valleys, with heights ranging from 750 to 1649 metres. The climate is mostly warm, with hot summers and rainy monsoons. During heavy rains, rivers may flood. Major rivers like Bhavani, Moyar, and Noyyal flow through the forest, providing water for plants and animals.

The forest has different types of vegetation, including dry thorn forests, deciduous forests, and semi-evergreen areas. Trees like teak, sandalwood, and bamboo grow here. The reserve is home to many animals such as elephants, tigers, leopards, sloth bears, and deer. It also has monkeys like Nilgiri langur and bonnet macaque.

Tribal Communities and Challenges

Indigenous tribes like the Irula and Kurumba live in this region. They depend on the forest for their daily needs. However, activities like illegal tourism and construction have created problems for both people and wildlife. The recent crackdown shows a strong effort to balance development with nature protection.

Government’s Conservation Effort

By taking strict action against illegal resorts, the government is sending a clear message about protecting forests. This step will help maintain ecological balance and ensure that wildlife habitats remain safe for future generations.
