Shahnavaz Khan Creates Indian Athletics History

Shahnavaz Khan has entered the record books with his bronze medal in Oregon. Before his performance, no Indian male athlete had won a long jump medal at the World Athletics U20 Championships.

India had already seen success in the women’s long jump at the junior world championships. Shaili Singh won the silver medal in the women’s long jump in 2021. Shahnavaz has now added the first men’s long jump medal for India at the event.

His achievement is particularly notable because he competed against some of the strongest young long jumpers from around the world in a highly competitive final.

7.84m Jump Secures Bronze

Shahnavaz’s best effort in the final was 7.84 metres. Although the mark was enough to put him on the podium, it was below his personal best of 8.30 metres.

The Indian athlete had shown the ability to jump much farther during the season. His personal best of 8.30m placed him among the leading young long jumpers heading into the championship.

The difference between his personal best and his final result may leave him wanting more, but the bronze medal remains a major achievement at a global junior championship.

Italy’s Inzoli Takes Gold

Italy’s Daniele Leonardo Inzoli won the gold medal after producing a jump of 7.97 metres. Australia’s Mason McGroder claimed silver with a 7.96m effort, which was a personal best.

The final was closely fought, with only a small difference separating the medal positions. McGroder came close to taking the gold medal with his final attempt, but his 7.96m jump placed him just behind Inzoli.

Shahnavaz’s 7.84m was enough to secure third place and give India another medal at the championship.

R.C. Jithin Arjunan Finishes Eighth

India had two athletes in the men’s long jump final. Alongside Shahnavaz Khan, R.C. Jithin Arjunan also competed for India.

Jithin recorded a best jump of 7.59 metres and finished eighth. Like Shahnavaz, his final performance was below his personal best, which stands at 8.12 metres.

Having two Indian athletes reach the final itself showed the growing strength of India’s young long jump group. The experience will also give both athletes valuable exposure to high-level international competition.

India’s Medal Run in Oregon

Shahnavaz Khan’s bronze became India’s third medal at the 2026 World Athletics U20 Championships. The country had already won two silver medals during the competition.

Ashish Yadav secured silver in the men’s javelin throw with a 74.09m effort. Basant Kumar Meghwal also won silver in the men’s high jump after clearing 2.21 metres.

With Shahnavaz’s long jump bronze, India’s young athletes have made a strong impression across several field events at the championships.
