Foundation Stone Laid at Tanakpur
The foundation ceremony took place in Tanakpur, a key town in Champawat district. Addressing a public gathering, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said that the Sharda River Corridor was one of the important promises made during the election campaign. He added that the project would bring long term benefits to Champawat and surrounding areas.
Dhami explained that the corridor would not only improve tourism facilities but also promote cultural and religious activities. He highlighted that local youth would benefit from new job opportunities created through tourism, construction work, and related services.
Tanakpur is located near the India–Nepal border and holds strategic and economic importance. The development of the riverfront and nearby areas is expected to increase visitor footfall and strengthen cross border tourism activities.
Large Scale Investment and Project Coverage
The Sharda River Corridor project will cover nearly 200 square kilometres of Champawat district. The total proposed investment for the project is around ₹3,300 crore. This makes it one of the largest development projects in the region in recent years.
In the first phase, several important works have already been launched and inaugurated. The redevelopment of Sharda Ghat has been completed at a cost of ₹10.7 crore. This redevelopment is expected to provide better facilities for pilgrims and tourists visiting the riverbank.
The Chief Minister also inaugurated the first phase of the Tanakpur city drainage system, built at a cost of ₹66 crore. This project aims to improve sanitation and urban infrastructure in the town. Better drainage facilities will help prevent waterlogging and improve public health conditions.
Apart from this, a helipad at Chuka was inaugurated to improve air connectivity in the region. A multi storey parking facility has also been developed to manage the increasing number of vehicles expected with rising tourism. These developments show that the government is focusing on both tourism and basic infrastructure.

Boost to Tourism and Adventure Activities
Tourism is at the centre of the Sharda River Corridor Champawat project. The government has proposed various facilities to attract different types of visitors. One of the major attractions will be river rafting on the Sharda river. Adventure lovers are expected to find new opportunities as the river offers suitable conditions for water sports.
Paragliding activities are also being planned under the corridor development. With scenic landscapes and river views, Champawat has the potential to become a popular destination for adventure tourism in Uttarakhand.
The Sharda river, which flows along the India–Nepal border in Uttarakhand, holds religious and cultural importance. The corridor aims to develop the riverfront in a planned manner so that tourism grows without harming the environment.
The state government is also planning to expand the famous Purnagiri mela, a major religious fair of Uttarakhand. Currently, the mela is organised for about three months. The government wants to extend its duration to attract tourists throughout the year. This step is expected to ensure steady economic activity and continuous income for local businesses.
Religious and Cultural Importance of the Region
Champawat district is part of the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand and is known for its rich cultural and religious heritage. The Sharda River Corridor Champawat project is designed to connect heritage conservation with modern infrastructure.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami mentioned that the state government is giving priority to the preservation and development of important temples and heritage sites. He referred to ongoing initiatives at Devidhura, Bageshwar, Jageshwar, and Patal Bhuvaneshwar. These sites are important pilgrimage destinations in Uttarakhand.
In Champawat itself, the famous Goljyu temple attracts devotees from different parts of the state. By linking these heritage sites with improved roads, facilities, and tourism services, the government aims to create a strong religious tourism circuit.
The corridor project will support these efforts by providing better access, improved riverfront areas, and modern facilities for visitors.
Employment and Economic Growth
One of the main objectives of the Sharda River Corridor Champawat project is employment generation. Large scale infrastructure projects create direct and indirect job opportunities. During the construction phase, local workers, engineers, and small contractors will benefit.
Once tourism increases, hotels, restaurants, transport services, and local shops are likely to see higher demand. Adventure tourism activities such as rafting and paragliding will require trained guides and support staff. This can provide new career options for local youth.
Small businesses, handicraft sellers, and food vendors are also expected to benefit from increased tourist arrivals. The project aims to ensure that economic growth reaches the grassroots level.
Infrastructure Development and Urban Improvement
The corridor is not limited to tourism alone. It also focuses on improving urban infrastructure in Tanakpur and nearby areas. The drainage system project, helipad, and parking facilities are part of a broader plan to modernise the town.
Better roads, clean riverfront areas, and organised public spaces will enhance the overall experience for residents and visitors. The integration of tourism with infrastructure development reflects a balanced approach.
The Sharda River Corridor Champawat project is being seen as a model where riverfront development, cultural heritage, and economic planning come together.

A New Phase for Champawat
With a major investment of ₹3,300 crore and a clear focus on tourism, culture, and infrastructure, the Sharda River Corridor Champawat project has the potential to change the future of the district. The foundation laid by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami marks the beginning of a long term development journey.
As work progresses in different phases, the people of Champawat are hopeful that the project will bring prosperity, improved facilities, and new recognition for their district. The corridor is expected to strengthen Champawat’s position as an important destination in Uttarakhand’s tourism map while creating lasting benefits for its residents.
