The study shows that the community depends on nature for healing. Their use of local plants is based on knowledge passed down through generations. This natural way of treatment is simple, affordable, and closely linked to their environment. It also plays a key role in ethnobotany, which studies how people use plants for medicine.

About the Sonowal Kachari Community

The Sonowal Kacharis are one of the oldest tribal groups in Assam. They are mainly found in Assam, with smaller groups living in Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya. They are officially recognised as a Scheduled Tribe (Plains) in Assam and are among the largest plain tribes in the state.

Ethnic Identity and Language

The community belongs to the Tibeto-Burman linguistic family and has Mongoloid roots. Even though they have their own ethnic identity, most Sonowal Kacharis speak Assamese in daily life. Hindi is also used when interacting with people from outside the community.

Traditional Lifestyle and Occupation

In the past, the Sonowal Kacharis were known for gold panning during the Ahom period. The name “Sonowal” itself comes from the word related to gold. Today, most of them are farmers. They grow rice, betel nut, sweet potatoes, and cotton. Their life is deeply connected to land and forests, which also supports their medicinal practices.

Culture and Religious Beliefs

The Sonowal Kacharis mainly follow Hinduism, but their practices are strongly influenced by local traditions. They worship Lord Shiva as their main deity. Instead of visiting big temples, they often maintain village shrines. Their culture reflects a mix of tribal beliefs and regional customs, helping them preserve their unique identity.
