Suvendu Adhikari CM Oath became a major political event in India after he was sworn in as the Chief Minister of West Bengal on 9 May 2026. He became the first Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader to hold the top post in the state and the 9th Chief Minister of West Bengal.

The Bharatiya Janata Party secured a huge victory in the 2026 West Bengal Legislative Assembly election. BJP won 207 out of 294 seats and ended the 15-year rule of the Trinamool Congress government led by Mamata Banerjee.
This election result marked a major political change in the state. The victory also strengthened BJP’s position in eastern India.
Suvendu Adhikari Takes Oath as Chief Minister
The oath-taking ceremony was held at Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata on 9 May 2026. West Bengal Governor R.N. Ravi administered the oath of office to Suvendu Adhikari under Article 164 of the Constitution of India.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah attended the ceremony along with many senior BJP leaders and supporters.
Role of the Chief Minister in West Bengal
The Chief Minister is the real executive head of the state government in India. The Governor officially appoints the Chief Minister after the election results.
West Bengal, located in eastern India, has a Legislative Assembly with 294 elected seats. The Chief Minister leads the Council of Ministers and manages the administration of the state government.

Suvendu Adhikari CM Oath and New Council of Ministers Formed
Along with Suvendu Adhikari, five other BJP MLAs also took oath as ministers. These leaders included Dilip Ghosh, Agnimitra Paul, Ashok Kirtania, Nisith Pramanik, and Kshudiram Tudu.
The new government is expected to focus on development, law and order, infrastructure, and employment in West Bengal.
End of Mamata Banerjee’s Long Tenure
Suvendu Adhikari succeeded Mamata Banerjee, who served as the Chief Minister of West Bengal since 2011. The 2026 election result ended her long tenure and brought a new political chapter to the state.
The Suvendu Adhikari CM Oath ceremony attracted national attention as it marked BJP’s first government in West Bengal history.
